Sphyrospermum flaviflorum A. C. Smith, Mem. New York Bot. Gard. 8(1): 45.  1952.  Type.  Ecuador.  Cañar: Valley of Río de Cañar, near Rosario, 1035 m, 6-10 Sep 1944 (fl), Prieto CP-16 (holotype: US, photo NY neg. 11124;  isotypes: F, NY).

         Epiphytic shrub;  stem thin, terete, glabrous;  twigs subterete, striate to ribbed, densely whitish puberulent, glabrate.  Leaves congested, coriaceous, succulent, elliptic, (11-)15-30 x 10-20 mm, base and apex rounded, margin thickened and slightly recurved, minutely but subpersistently white puberulent beneath and also glandular-fimbriate;  3-5-plinerved from the base, midrib slightly impressed above and raised beneath, lateral nerves obscure;  petiole subterete, 1-2 mm long, glabrate.  Inflorescence with flowers axillary, solitary; floral bract deltate, acute, ca. 0.5 mm long, ciliate;  pedicel thin, subterete, striate, 2.5-3.5 mm long, white-hispidulous with hairs 0.3-0.6 mm long and also with few, scattered, glandular fimbriae;  bracteoles basal, minute, narrowly triangular, acuminate, ca. 0.6 mm long.  Flowers 5-merous, with calyx 3-4 mm long, white-hispidulous;  hypanthium spherical-cupuliform, ca. 1.5-2 mm long;  limb campanulate-spreading, deeply 5-lobed, ca. 1.5  mm long;  lobes elongate-triangular, long-acuminate, ca. 1.3-1.5 mm long;  sinuses obtuse or rounded; corolla subcarnose, campanulate, ca. 5-5.5 mm long and 4 mm diam. at apex, yellowish, tinged with pink if exposed to sun, sparsely hispidulous, the lobes broadly ovate-deltate, acute, ca. 0.5 mm long;  stamens 10, alternately slightly unequal, ca. 4 mm long;  filaments thin, ca. 1.3-1.5 mm long, glabrous;  anthers 2.7-3 mm long;  thecae 1-1.2 mm long;  tubules ca. 1.6-1.8 mm long, dehiscing by subterminal pores ca. 0.2 mm long;  nectariferous disc annular-pulvinate, glabrous;  style filiform, about equal with the corolla.  Berry not seen.

          Distribution.  Endemic to Ecuador and known only from the type collection;  forest, at 1035 m altitude.  Rare and endangered.
