Sphyrospermum microphyllum Sleumer, Notizbl. Bot. Gart. Berlin-Dahlem 12: 133.  1934.  Type.  Ecuador, Puente de Chimbo, 400 m, Sep 1891 (fl),  Sodiro 92/28 (holotype:  B†, destroyed;  lectotype, designated by Luteyn, 1966: US leaf fragment ex B).

         Epiphyte;  stem and twigs thin, terete, striate, puberulent.  Leaves subsessile, congested, membranous to subcoriaceous, ovate to suborbicular, 5-10(-15) x 4.5-6(-8) mm, base broadly rounded, apex rounded, margin entire, white pilose with hairs ca. 1 mm long along the margin (these deciduous) and beneath; 3-plinerved, with midrib and nerves inconspicuous above and obscure beneath.  Inflorescence of solitary flowers, surrounded at their base by a series of few, ovate, acute, glabrous bracts;  floral bract and bracteoles (nearly basal) ovate to narrowly triangular, acute to acuminate, ca. 0.3 mm long, glabrous but margin glandular-fimbriate;  pedicel thin, 3-6 mm long, glabrous.  Flowers 4-merous, with calyx ca. 1.3-1.5 mm long, densely hispidulous to tomentose;  hypanthium subglobose, ca. 0.7 mm long;  limb short-campanulate, ca. 0.6-0.6 mm long;  lobes 4, acute, ca. 0.2-0.3 mm long;  sinuses rounded;  corolla cylindric, the throat narrowed and contracted, 3.5-4 mm long, essentially glabrous, white with rose lobes to totally red (fide label data), the lobes ovate, acute, ca. 0.3 mm long; stamens 8, subequalling the corolla;  filaments thin, ca. 1.6 mm long, glabrous below and pilose above;  thecae ca. 0.8 mm long;  tubules ca. 2 mm long, dehiscing by oblique-elongate pores;  style thin, ca. 4.5 mm long.  Mature berry not seen.

         Distribution.  Endemic to Ecuador: primary rainforest at 650-800 m altitude.
