Sphyrospermum munchiqueënse Luteyn, Opera Bot. 92: 124, fig. 9A-C.  1987.  Type.          Terrestrial shrub to 0.75 m tall;  stems subterete, striate, glabrous, stramineous when dry;  immature twigs complanate, angled, striate, puberulent.  Leaves coriaceous, ovate, (1-)2-3.5 x (0.8-)1.5-2.5 cm, basally rounded or slightly subcordate, apically rounded or obtuse, rarely retuse, glabrous but glandular-fimbriate beneath;  3-plinerved from the base, midrib and lateral nerves conspicuously impressed above, sometimes raised beneath but usually obscure, veinlets impressed above but obscure on both surfaces;  petiole terete, rugose, puberulent, 1-2 mm long.  Inflorescence with 1-3 axillary, fascicled flowers, each subtended by several ovate bractlets less than 1 mm long;  pedicels thin, terete, 18-25 mm long, glabrous or sparsely short-pilose near the base;  bracteoles obscure, subopposite, located about 1/3 up from pedicel base, linear, marginally glandular-fimbriate, ca. 0.5-1 mm long.  Flowers: calyx glabrous, glandular-fimbriate, 2.5-3 mm long at anthesis, green or green suffused with red when fresh;  hypanthium subspherical to obconic, 1.5-2.5 mm long;  limb campanulate, 0.5-1 mm long;  lobes triangular, apiculate, with a tuft of hairs dorsally;  sinuses rounded;  corolla subcylindric, 5-6 mm long, glabrous without but moderately densely pilose within, bright yellow when fresh, the lobes triangular, acute, ca. 0.75 mm long, strongly reflexed at anthesis;  stamens 8, equal, 5.5 mm long;  filaments distinct, basally conspicuously callose-thickened, 3 mm long, pilose above the middle;  anthers 3 mm long;  thecae 1-1.3 mm long; style 6 mm long;  nectariferous disk conspicuously pulvinate.  Berry ellipsoid, 6 x 4 mm, lavender when fresh.

         Distribution.  Endemic to west-central Colombia;  in montane forest, at 1875-2250 m.  Rare and endangered.
