Themistoclesia costaricensis Luteyn & Wilbur, Brittonia 29: 265.  1977.  Type.  Costa Rica.  Cartago:  Along the Río Grande de Orosi, Luteyn et al. 4407 [holotype, DUKE;  isotypes, F, MO, NY(2x)].

        Pendent, epiphytic shrub with branches to 0.5 m long;  stems terete, minutely striate, tan to reddish-brown when dry, hispidulous with reddish-brown trichomes 0.6-0.8 mm long, glabrate with age.  Leaves distichous, flat or concave, ovate, (1.6-)2-2.5 x (0.8-)1-2 cm, basally rounded or subcordate, apically acute or short acuminate, entire, hispidulous above especially near the margins, glabrous beneath, brown above and olive-green or light brown beneath when dry;  obscurely 5-plinerved, the midrib slightly impressed proximally, raised distally above, slightly impressed but inconspicuous beneath, the lateral nerves and the veinlets slightly raised but inconspicuous above, totally obscure beneath; petiole subterete, densely puberulous to pilosulose, 1-1.5 mm long.  Inflorescence of axillary, solitary flowers with 4 minute basal inflorescence bracts;  floral bracts ovate, ciliate, ca. 1.5 mm long;  pedicel terete, glabrous, 1-2 mm long, completely concealed by the bracteoles;  bracteoles 2, ovate to hemispheric, distally hispidulous.  Flowers with the calyx glaucous, copiously pilosulose with translucent or reddish tinged trichomes 1-1.2 mm long;  hypanthium obconic, bluntly 5-angled, ca. 3 mm long;  limb 1-1.5 mm long including apiculate lobes;  corolla cylindric, narrowed at the throat, 5-6 mm long and ca. 2.2 mm in diam. near the base, pilosulose throughout, white, the lobes ca. 1 mm long;  stamens 10, ca. 5 mm long; filaments alternately 2.8-3 mm and 3-3.2 mm long, pilosulose over the entire length;  anthers ca. 2.5 mm long;  tubules slightly longer than the thecae;  theca with a minute, 0.1 mm long, finger-like appendage protruding from the base;  style 5-6 mm long, glabrous.  Berry not seen.

        Distribution.  Costa Rica, Panama, and Colombia.  Rare.
