Themistoclesia flexuosa Luteyn, Brittonia 29(2): 177, fig. 1.  1977.  Type. Colombia.  Huila: 23 km from Altamira, towards Florencia, virgin cloud forest slopes, 2270 m, 15 Jan 1976, Luteyn et al. 4876 (holotype, COL;  isotypes, F, GH, L, NY, US).  Image: Line-drawing.

         Pendent, epiphytic shrub to 2 m;  mature branches terete, glabrous, gray;  bark cracking longitudinally;  immature branches and twigs of new growth subterete, flexuous, hispidulous becoming glabrate, reddish-brown.  Leaves distichous, ovate, (2.5-)4-4.5 x 1.5-2.5 cm, basally rounded or obtuse, apically acuminate, mucronulate, somewhat rugulose on both surfaces, weakly scattered pilose on both surfaces;  obscurely 3(-5) plinerved, midrib slightly impressed above and raised beneath, entire lamina somewhat concave-revolute and "hiding" the inflorescence;  petioles terete, rugose, 1.5-2(-4) mm long, hirtellous.   Inflorescence axillary, short-racemose, 1-3 flowered;  rachis terete, hispidulous, to ca. 5 mm long;  floral bracts minute, subulate, ca. 1 mm long;  pedicels terete, slightly thickened distally, hispidulous, 6.5-9 mm long;  bracteoles subulate, hispidulous, ca. 1 mm long.  Flowers with calyx pilose, ca. 4 mm long;  hypanthium hemispheric, bluntly 5-angled basally, ca. 2.5 mm long;  limb including the inconspicuous lobes slightly spreading, ca. 1.5 mm long and 5 mm diam;  sinuses flat;  corolla cylindric, slightly inflated basally, 8-10 mm long and ca. 4 mm in basal diam, glabrous, the lobes oblong, obtuse, ca. 1.5 mm long, pilose, reflexed at anthesis to expose stamens and style;  stamens 10, equal;  filaments 4-5 mm long, marginally pilose;  anthers including tubules ca. 5 mm long;  thecae ca. 2 mm long;  style terete, ca. 9 mm long;  disc annular, pulvinate, glabrous.  Fruit not seen.

        Distribution.  Endemic to Colombia and known only from the type.  Rare and endangered.
