Historical Note

The Society for Economic Botany (SEB) is a professional association of botanists, anthropologists, pharmacologists, and others interested in the scientific study of useful plants. Although the core group of founding members began meeting to share information and discuss issues pertinent to the still-developing field of economic botany in 1950, the SEB was not formally established and incorporated until 1959. The society seeks to develop and promote interdisciplinary channels of communication among individuals and groups concerned with past, present, and future uses of plants and their benefits for humanity. The organization publishes Economic Botany, a quarterly journal containing book reviews and annotated lists of collections and titles of publications related to the study of economic botany, and Plants and People, the semiannual newsletter.


Scope and Content

The Society for Economic Botany Records document the organizational history and activities of the leading American botanical association dedicated to the study of the uses of plants and plant products for humanity's benefit. These records encompass the period from the first informal meetings and discussions of founding scientists in 1950 up through the present. These records consist of annual meeting records and programs, council and other meeting minutes, correspondence of officers, membership lists, financial statements and reports, awards, publications, photographs, video and multimedia. The Society for Economic Botany Records is divided into 12 series. The bulk of the records are devoted to annual meetings and general correspondence, along with Economic Botany files, membership lists, financial statements.

Acquisition Information

The records of the Society for Economic Botany (SEB) were transferred to the New York Botanical Garden Library (Archives) as its official archival repository. A signed agreement establishing the Garden as the official repository for the archives in the SEB files and well as in the files of the NYBG archivist. These records were transferred in several intervals, from 1982 to 2002. Records continue to add as they are received. Access is restricted to SEB members.
