Biography of Dennis A. Brown

Dennis A. Brown, head of Horticulture and Maintenance at the New York Botanical Garden from 1966 to 1974, was born in Wales on September 20, 1926. He was educated in England and trained at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. While serving in a variety of horticultural capacities in England, he received numerous certificates and diplomas in recognition of his contributions. During his eight years at the NYBG he planned and supervised the horticultural and gardening activities and general maintenance. In 1974 he was appointed assistant commissioner in charge of horticulture and forestry in the New York City Parks Department. At his death on January 21, 1978 at the age of 52, he was working as a consultant to various horticultural organizations and had completed a book, "The Encyclopedia Botanica," which was published posthumously in 1978 by Dial Press.


Scope and Content

The Dennis A. Brown records comprise the administrative records of the Department of Horticulture and Maintenance from 1959 to 1974. The collection includes reports and background materials for development, finance, maintenance, personnel, public relations and security.
