Percy Gentle was a Belizean botanist who dedicated the latter half of his life to documenting the Belize flora. He collected the finest quality herbarium specimens, representing approximately 60 percent of the flora. From 1931, until shortly before his death in 1958, he collected 9,756 numbers-- more numbers from Belize than any other collector. Percy Gentle's collections were sent to numerous major herbaria in the United States, Mexico and Europe. Their number and quality attest to his devotion. His keen eye for new plants yielded over one hundred new species and many others remain the only record known for Belize. The "Checklist of the Vascular Plants of Belize, with Common Names and Uses" is respectfully dedicated to the memory and legacy of Percy Gentle. (Illustration by Elizabeth E. Atha) |
