Since 1987, Drs. Rosita Arvigo and Michael J. Balick have worked with a number of Belizean traditional medical practitioners to collect and document the use of plant ethnomedicines. Detailed information on use was obtained, and herbarium specimens were prepared to serve as vouchers.

Each entry includes: scientific name; Belizean common name; description; habitat; detailed report on the local uses in traditional Belizean medicine; research results (laboratory research and observation); and a scientific illustration by artist Laura Evans.

In addition to serving as a registry of cultural information on Belizean plants, the book is also designed for use by teachers and students, traditional healers and researchers.

A portion of the proceeds from this book is used to support traditional healers and ecosystem preservation in the Central American rainforests.

"In their book and throughout their work, Drs. Arvigo and Balick light the fires and carry the torch toward preservation of the rainforests and the indigenous cultures that exist within them."
Mickey Hart

"The authors have made a valuable contribution to the literature on ethnobotany of both rain forest and medicinal plants as well as the little-known practices of healers of this beautiful region."
