Wild Medicine Photo Contest Winners: Week 1

Posted in Photography on February 5 2015, by Lansing Moore

cacaoWe’re thrilled to announce the winners of the first week of our Wild Medicine Photo Contest. This year’s contest is off to a promising start with some very beautiful submissions. You’ll certainly appreciate them as much as we did. Week 2 officially began on Saturday, January 31, so all photos taken inside the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory and uploaded to the NYBG Flickr Group Pool with the tag “#wildmedicine2015” before 6 p.m. tomorrow will be eligible for consideration in the next round. There is plenty of time to participate, as the contest lasts until February 20 while the Wild Medicine in the Tropics exhibition is on display in the Haupt Conservatory.

Weekly winners are selected in two categories, Macro (close-up) and Sense of Place (wideshot). Because this week’s submissions did not include enough Sense of Place photos, only one weekly winner was selected in this category. Otherwise, click through to to view the First Place and First and Second Runner-Up winners in the Macro category, as well as the First Place winner in the Sense of Place category.

Enter your own photos from the Haupt Conservatory for consideration, and you could win the Grand Prize—a seat in the Adult Education Photography class of your choice! There is stiff competition in the Macro category, but Sense of Place is where an aspiring photographer could really shine!

Good morning. These are stunning. Please provide the names of the plants and location so that we can visit them. Thanks for this experience.

thanks…

the bright orange flower is Kleinia fulgens, a succulent in the room just past the desert & cactus.

the large purple flower is a Vanda Orchid, it’s very colorful…probably epiphytic (not sure) and nice to photograph in the water pool room with hanging vines.

as far as the tiny starry purple flowers, not sure… maybe Susan, Ivo or Sonia can identify botanically…the blossoms are high on vines in the water pool
room.

hope this helps:)

The starry purple fallen floaters are Petrea volubilis (also knowns a “Queen’s Wreath”). I believe it grows in Mexico. Don’t know where else this vine hails from. This vine can be found in the NYBG’s Aquatic Plant Room. Flower clusters are reminiscent of wisteria.
