Tomorrow is the big day! At long last the Holiday Train Show, a New York Favorite, returns to NYBG. Over 150 plant-based replicas fill the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, including several new and updated landmarks! From dearly departed monuments to familiar favorites, these miniature models are suspended in time, criss-crossed by almost a quarter-mile of tracks. Tickets are reserved in advance, so check out our schedule of programs now and pick a day to enjoy this 23-year tradition with your family.

Tomorrow we kick off the new season of festivities with our Holiday Tree Lighting at 4 p.m., so don’t miss it if you’re planning to be hear toward sundown! And when you’re in the Conservatory, keep an eye out for replicas marked by a red label. These represent the many designated New York City Landmarks represented in this year’s Holiday Train Show as part of an exciting partnership with the NYC Landmarks50 Alliance to commemorate 50 years of the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission.
This weekend also marks the opening of two very unique exhibitions in the LuEsther T. Mertz Library. Flora Illustrata: A Celebration of Botanical Masterworks, in the Art Gallery, highlights many of the treasures from the Mertz Library’s unparalleled Rare Book Collection. Journey through botanical history as you admire books, manuscripts, maps, private letters, and art from around the world—some of which are on public display for the first time! In the Ross Gallery, NYBG is also proud to present Hudson Valley Seed Library: Art of the Heirloom, a display of art commissioned by the Hudson Valley Seed Library for a series of limited edition seed packets.

NYBG’s trees are at 90% of peak color, jumping from 60% on Wednesday! Our Foliage Tracker has been going haywire this week as leaf season arrives in full force, just in time for the first of our Fall Forest Weekends. Autumn at the NYBG is at its most dazzling right now, and we have a full lineup of exciting activities to complete your experience of the colorful and serene woods. See live birds of prey, watch a master woodcarver at work, and even paddle a canoe down the Bronx River as you admire the Thain Family Forest from the best possible vantage point. NYBG will be open all Columbus Day Weekend—including Monday, October 13—for three days of special programming! Today through Monday, the Japanese Pop-Up Restaurant in the Garden Café will be open for visitors who want to complete their experience at Kiku: The Art of the Japanese Garden in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory.
Families in The Haunted Pumpkin Garden will enjoy three days of Halloween Parades in the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden. Kids will also enjoy Scarecrow Weekend in the Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden as they celebrate the harvest season with festive activities all across NYBG. All ages can learn about the conservation of one of Halloween’s most celebrated creatures, the bat, at our Gone Batty! Live Bat Encounter at the Clay Family Picnic Pavilions. The Perennial Garden will even host a live demonstration for making the perfect fall centerpiece.
Don’t forget that next weekend Ray Villafane returns to NYBG for our Pumpkin Carving Weekend. You won’t want to miss the chance to see his latest creepy creation come to life! Catch a sneak peek at Grand Central Terminal on October 17 when Ray will be there with his team, beginning work on a massive zombie carving. MasterCard® cardholders can also let their kids join in the fun with one of our Budding Masters Creepy Pumpkin Carving Adventures!

The first weekend of Kiku: The Art of the Japanese Garden begins tomorrow, and to celebrate we have a full schedule of special programs. Come admire hundreds of meticulously trained kiku in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory and attend our special Kiku Poetry Reading with Chase Twichell; view demonstrations of Ikebana: The Art of Japanese Flower Arranging; and enjoying a delicious meal at our Japanese Pop-Up Restaurant. There are many ways to immerse yourself in the beautiful traditions of Japanese gardens.
At the same time, The Haunted Pumpkin Garden is continuing to fill the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden with spooky seasonal fun for the whole family. This weekend includes Halloween Parades and the chance to meet the Creepy Critters of Halloween! Kick off fall with NYBG this weekend at the Harvest Festival! Two days of music and activities will fill the Garden grounds to benefit the Edible Academy. Come enjoy games on Daffodil Hill, and work up an appetite for our array of specialty samplers and vendors of food, beer, and wine while our exciting lineup of Americana bands fills the air with music. For those who want the full VIP experience, special tickets are available for a live cooking demonstration by Mario Batali and his co-host from ABC’s The Chew, Carla Hall! Those who purchase tickets to Sunday’s Family Garden Picnic may even access a booksigning with Carla Hall or an exclusive reception hosted by Mario Batali—all to support NYBG’s children’s education hub, the Edible Academy.
Your All-Garden Pass grants you access to the Harvest Festival, as well as the recently opened Haunted Pumpkin Garden. The countdown to Halloween has officially begun with tomorrow’s debut of The Haunted Pumpkin Garden! From now through October 31 the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden will be taken over by eye-catching pumpkins and spooky fun for all ages.
Kids can join in Halloween Parades every weekend at 1 and 3 p.m. and enjoy a whole variety of pumpkin-themed activities. Starting tomorrow, the Creepy Creatures of Halloween will visit NYBG every weekend. Get to know some of the oddest critters around and learn how they live in the wild. We have another gorgeous weekend in store, and the Garden promises to be especially lovely. The Native Plant Garden, with its thriving meadow especially beautiful these days, will host tours on Saturday and Sunday. Children will enjoy such popular programs as Dig! Plant! Grow! and Mario Batali’s Kitchen Gardens.
For those families who want to take advantage of the weather and spend a very special evening together, Sunday is the next of our Family Dinners with Mario Batali’s Chefs. Come spend Sunday evening enjoying a cooking demonstration by two chefs from Eataly as they use fresh produce from the Family Garden to prepare a three-course menu. Kids will learn about nutrition and enjoy hands-on activities. A few tickets are still available!

Happy Friday! It’s a particularly happy one because it’s almost Memorial Day. That means we have three days of exciting activities for all ages lined up to help you celebrate the official beginning of summer at the Garden with a well-deserved long weekend.
This weekend is the time to revel in the lyricism of past masters with this Saturday’s Groundbreakers Poetry Reading, an enlightening journey to a past century through the words of Edna St. Vincent Millay—words you can also see adorning the grounds in our Groundbreakers Poetry Walk. None other than renowned feminist poet Eavan Boland will be in attendance to recite these classic poems. Meanwhile, the little ones can celebrate Memorial Day with the uplifting music of John Philip Sousa and make some tunes of their own during SousaKazooza! It’s just one of a whole roster of new family programs we have lined up for summer—and it all begins this weekend at the Garden!
