Mario Batali’s Kitchen Gardens: Get Ready to Party!

Posted in Around the Garden on August 13 2012, by Ann Rafalko

Mark you calendars: The Edible Garden Festival is just over a month away; on September 23, The New York Botanical Garden will be home to one big, family-friendly edible festival featuring Garden friend Mario Batali!

Families can spend the day in the Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden exploring “Mario Batali’s Kitchen Gardens,” watch cooking demonstrations with NYBG staff, participate in a plethora of hands-on gardening activities, and enjoy food sampling. A special ticket is required for the Festival and includes All-Garden Pass access to the Garden. This ticket does not include the Mario Batali cooking demonstration or the Garden-to-Table Dinner with Mario Batali.

Later in the day, this moveable feast of a festival heads to the Conservatory tent for a cooking demonstration with Garden friend and chef extraordinaire Mario Batali! In this special cooking demonstration, Mario will prepare a number of fresh, family-friendly, seasonal dishes inspired by “Mario Batali’s Kitchen Gardens,” a series of beds planted by the chefs from his restaurants in the Howell Family Garden. A special ticket is required for this cooking demonstration and includes entrance to the Edible Garden Festival, andAll-Garden Pass access.

After the demonstration by Mario, the Festival moves again and kicks into high gear. The Garden-to-Table Dinner with Mario Batali is unique culinary experience featuring a three-course menu inspired by the produce growing in the “Mario Batali’s Kitchen Gardens” beds that he has designed (see the menu here). Mario will enjoy the meal with you and share culinary anecdotes, memories, and inspirations. Garden-to-Table Dinner and Cooking Demonstration with Mario Batali tickets include preferred seats at the Mario Batali cooking demonstration in the Conservatory Tent, entrance to the Edible Garden Festival, All-Garden Pass access, and the three-course dinner served with wine, beer, and sparkling soda in a Garden location to be announced shortly.

Whether you come for one, or all three of the events during the Edible Garden Festival, we’re certain you and your family will enjoy a special day at the Garden, and that you’ll leave with a greater appreciation for the beautiful produce at the Greenmarket or farmer’s stand.
