This Weekend: Celebrate Dad with The Villalobos Brothers

Peggy Rokefeller Rose Garden beeSunday happens to be the day that we show Dad how much we care, but NYBG’s starting things early with a Saturday night event! Tickets are still available for the Canciones de mi Padre (Songs of My Father) Concert on Saturday, June 20. This evening concert features The Villalobos Brothers and Humberto Flores, as well as Mexican soprano Gizel Xanath. La Casa Azul Taco Truck will be open, or you can enjoy the perfect Frida al Fresco evening by making a reservation at Hudson Garden Grill (final reservations at 5:45 p.m. unless otherwise noted) for a full-service dining experience in our newly opened restaurant. Each Frida al Fresco ticket includes a complimentary Modelo Especial draft cerveza or Jose Cuervo Tradicional margarita!

The Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden will have plenty of seasonal family activities, from Dig! Plant! Grow! to cooking demonstrations at the Whole Foods Market® Family Garden Kitchen. So, whenever you plan to start celebrating your Father’s Day Weekend, we’ll have something going to make it special.

Saturday, June 20
Seasonal Walk

Bird Walk – 11 a.m.
Meet at the Reflecting Pool at the Leon Levy Visitor Center.
The diverse habitats of the Botanical Garden offer visitors a chance to see dozens of species of birds throughout the year. Bring your binoculars and walk the Garden grounds with an expert to learn about bird-friendly habitats, migrating species, and birds that make a permanent home at the Garden.

Rose Garden Tour – 12:30 & 2:30 p.m.
Meet at the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden.
Immerse yourself in the fragrance, color, and beauty of the award-winning Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden on a tour with a Garden Tour Guide. Learn the differences between Heritage and Modern roses and between floribundas and hybrid teas as well as facts about rose history, cultivation, and folklore.

Live Music and Dance – 1 p.m. Ross Hall; 2–4 p.m. Garden Grounds
Part of FRIDA KAHLO: Art, Garden, Life
Take a journey through Mexico with traditional dancing featuring Calpulli Danza Mexicana. After their indoor set, see them perform throughout the Garden.

¡Cámara, Acción! Mexican Film Series – 3 p.m.

Every Saturday at 3 p.m., experience Frida Kahlo on the big screen with the Academy Award-winning film Frida, directed by Julie Taymor and starring Salma Hayek. On Sundays, a revolving series of compelling documentaries, shorts, and features takes you inside the vibrant culture of Mexico today, presented in partnership with Cinema Tropical.

Frida chronicles the life Frida Kahlo shared unflinchingly and openly with Diego Rivera as the young couple took the art world by storm. Frida Kahlo lived a bold and uncompromising life as a political, artistic, and sexual revolutionary.

Rock Garden Tour – 4 p.m.
Meet at the Reflecting Pool at the Leon Levy Visitor Center
The Rock Garden is a 2.5-acre oasis complete with a pond and waterfall and featuring alpine plants from six continents. Join an expertly trained Garden Guide for a walking tour to see and learn more about these jewel-like plants.

Canciones de mi Padre (Songs of my Father) Concert – Doors open at 6 p.m.; concert takes place from 7-8:30 p.m.
On the Conservatory Lawn
Dad won’t want to miss this throwback to the heyday of Linda Ronstadt with a performance of her landmark album of traditional Mexican folk songs—the top selling non-English album in American history—by The Villalobos Brothers and Humberto Flores, featuring a special appearance by Gizel Xanath, other guest artists, and a full mariachi band. Bring a picnic blanket and set up under the stars for a relaxed evening of music, refreshments, and the continued celebration of Mexican heritage at the heart of our spring exhibition, FRIDA KAHLO: Art, Garden, Life. Visit La Casa Azul Taco Truck while you’re here, and enjoy a complimentary Modelo Especial draft cerveza or Jose Cuervo Tradicional margarita included with your ticket to this Father’s Day weekend concert. Garden beds are filled with plants featured in the favorite recipes of the chefs from Mario Batali’s restaurants. Kids can explore the gardens to solve Mario’s Menu Mystery game.

Dig! Plant! Grow! Scent-sational Herbs – 1:30–6 p.m.
In the Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden
Plants and imaginations grow at the Howell Family Garden, where kids are allowed!—no, encouraged!—to play in the dirt. Display gardens, such as the Global Gardens and the Bean Tunnel or Salad Bowl, and daily interactive gardening activities delight and inspire. Drop-in activities end at 5:30 p.m.

Cooking with Frida – 2 & 4 p.m.

In the Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden
Hands-on activities in the Edible Academy’s Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden bring together children and their families to experience the colors, textures, smells, and tastes of Frida Kahlo’s Mexican kitchen. Cooking demonstrations feature recipes inspired by those Frida served to family and friends, using nutritious, garden-based ingredients. Visitors can explore and tend to the plant staples of Mexican cuisine growing throughout the Family Garden: beans, tomatoes, peppers, chiles, herbs, and more!

Frida’s Flora and Fauna – 10 a.m.–5:30 p.m.

Everett Children’s Adventure Garden
Visit the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden to experience the inspiration Frida Kahlo found in the natural world that can be seen and appreciated in her artwork. Throughout the Adventure Garden investigate plants and animals growing and living in New York City, using your senses as well as scientific tools to discover your own creative muse.
