Peggy Rockefeller Rose GardenHappy Friday! Once again it is time for our weekly roundup of weekend programs and activities at the Garden. June 6 & 7 is Rose Garden Weekend!

This popular highlight of the season’s Spring Weekend offerings at NYBG is when we invite you all to enjoy the seasonal beauty of the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden‘s nearly 700 rose cultivars! According to Rose Watch, they are now at 75% of peak color, and and rapidly climbing toward full bloom. Admire the vibrant blooming season with live music, refreshments, and expert-led tours and talks—a beautiful experience for everyone from casual rose admirers to experienced rosarians. You can even take part in a rose gardening demonstration.

Live Music Among the Roses – 11 a.m., 12, 1, 2, & 3 p.m.
In the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden pergola
Throughout the day, live acoustic performances featuring the melodies of harp and cello create the perfect atmosphere for relaxing amid the spring beauty of the Rose Garden.

Rose Garden Tours – 11:30 a.m., 12:30, 1:30, 2:30, & 3:30 p.m.
Meet at the entrance to the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden
Grow your knowledge of roses with this in-depth look at the collection in the Rose Garden. Discover the best blooms to grow in your area, the amazing varieties of color and fragrance, and the history of rose cultivation.

Q&A Sessions with Rose Gardeners – 1–4 p.m.
Throughout the Rose Garden
Rose Garden staff will answer your questions on cultivars to grow in your garden, provide the history of the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden, point out some of the highlights of the season, and more.

Home Gardening Demonstration: Life is Rosy – 2 p.m.
Meet at the entrance to the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden
Join a staff gardener as they cover standard rose care practice, from fertilizing to pruning.

Raffle Drawings for Rose Plants – 12:30 & 2 p.m.
Information booth at the entrance to the Rose Garden
Enter to win a rose plant to take home! Learn how to care for it from one of our experts on site.
Winner must be present at time of drawing to win.

Refreshments for Sale – 11 a.m.–4 p.m.
Stephen STARR Events provides delicious refreshments, wine, and beer for purchase to help you enjoy your afternoon at the Garden.

Bird Walk – 11 a.m.
Meet at the Reflecting Pool at the Leon Levy Visitor Center
The diverse habitats of the Botanical Garden offer visitors a chance to see dozens of species of birds throughout the year. Bring your binoculars and walk the Garden grounds with an expert to learn about bird-friendly habitats, migrating species, and birds that make a permanent home at the Garden.

Textile Demonstrations: Female Artisans from Oaxaca – 10 a.m.–5 p.m.
In Shop in the Garden
Women artisans from Chiapas and Oaxaca demonstrate their age-old techniques in weaving and embroidery. Using the backstrap loom, these textile artists evoke ancient motifs with natural dyes, striking a beautiful balance between traditional and contemporary.

Live Music and Dance – 1 p.m. Ross Hall; 2-4 p.m. Garden Grounds
Part of FRIDA KAHLO: Art, Garden, Life
Take a journey through Mexico through the sound of different regional music and dance with Calpulli Danza Mexicana. After their indoor set, see them perform throughout the Garden.

¡Cámara, Acción! Mexican Film Series – 3 p.m.
In Ross Hall
Experience on the big screen a revolving series of compelling documentaries, shorts, and features takes you inside the vibrant culture of Mexico today, presented in partnership with Cinema Tropical.
Today’s Feature: FRIDA (Julie Taymor, USA, 2002, 123 min. Rated R) (English)
Frida chronicles the life Frida Kahlo shared unflinchingly and openly with Diego Rivera as the young couple took the art world by storm. Frida Kahlo lived a bold and uncompromising life as a political, artistic, and sexual revolutionary.

In this comedic ensemble piece, a Mexican theater company is in rehearsals for a production of Caligula by Albert Camus. Things aren’t going well: the lead actress is furious with the neurotic and depressed director, the lead actor is having panic attacks, and an older actor can’t memorize his lines. It’s going to take a miracle for this play to open…Winner of multiple prizes—including the audience award—at the Guadalajara International Film Festival, Last Call is the kind of character driven comedy that recalls the early films of Almodóvar.

Mario Batali’s Kitchen Gardens – 1:30 p.m.–6 p.m.
In the Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden
Garden beds are filled with plants featured in the favorite recipes of the chefs from Mario Batali’s restaurants. Kids can explore the gardens to solve Mario’s Menu Mystery game.

Dig! Plant! Grow! Salad Days – 1:30–6 p.m.
In the Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden
Plants and imaginations grow at the Howell Family Garden, where kids are allowed!—no, encouraged!—to play in the dirt. Display gardens, such as the Global Gardens and the Bean Tunnel or Salad Bowl, and daily interactive gardening activities delight and inspire. Drop-in activities end at 5:30 p.m.

Cooking with Frida – 2 & 4 p.m.

In the Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden
Hands-on activities in the Edible Academy’s Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden bring together children and their families to experience the colors, textures, smells, and tastes of Frida Kahlo’s Mexican kitchen. Cooking demonstrations feature recipes inspired by those Frida served to family and friends, using nutritious, garden-based ingredients. Visitors can explore and tend to the plant staples of Mexican cuisine growing throughout the Family Garden: beans, tomatoes, peppers, chiles, herbs, and more!

Frida’s Flora and Fauna – 10 a.m.–5:30 p.m.

Everett Children’s Adventure Garden
Visit the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden to experience the inspiration Frida Kahlo found in the natural world that can be seen and appreciated in her artwork. Throughout the Adventure Garden investigate plants and animals growing and living in New York City, using your senses as well as scientific tools to discover your own creative muse.
