This Weekend: Catch Frida Before It’s Too Late

IVO_0682Don’t let the weather get you down—it’s the perfect time to see the Garden, and FRIDA KAHLO: Art, Garden, Life, in its final days. There are plenty of ways to stay dry while appreciating the rich art and glorious outdoors at the Garden! With beautiful dance performances, enlightening film screenings, and fascinating demonstrations, there really isn’t a reason to not come. Don’t let the weather ruin your well-deserved weekend!

In the coming weeks, look out for some family-friendly, spooktastic activities. Bring the whole family and find monarch butterflies, see artfully sculpted giant pumpkins, go batty with live bats, and more! The Garden will be bustling with fun fall activities this October, so plan ahead, and get your tickets now!

Textile Weaving Demonstrations: Artisans from Oaxaca–10 a.m.-5 p.m.
NYBG Shop
Artisans from Oaxaca demonstrate their age-old techniques in weaving, embroidery, and gourd carving. Using the backstrap loom, these textile artists evoke ancient motifs with natural dyes, striking a beautiful balance between traditional and contemporary. Visiting artisans are part of the Unión de Artesanas de Los Alto women’s cooperative, and Chamuchic, a supporter of indigenous arts.

Garden Highlights Tour–12:30 p.m.
Meet at the Reflecting Pool at the Leon Levy Visitor Center
Sights and scents flourish across the 250 acres of the Botanical Garden. Join a Garden Guide for a walking tour featuring highlights of the gardens and plant collections.

Native Plant Garden Tour–2:30 p.m.
Meet at the Reflecting Pool at the Leon Levy Visitor Center
Join a tour guide for an insider’s view of the newly designed Native Plant Garden. Enjoy a mosaic of nearly 100,000 native trees, wildflowers, ferns and grasses designed to flourish in every season.

Mexico Beyond Mariachi, a collective of professional teaching artist, musicians, and dancers creates a bridge that connects audiences to the living traditions of Mexico through a musical journey that begins with the conquest and leads to the present day. The New York Metro area performance group has been seen by more than one million people over the last 10 years.

Live Performance Art: The Two Fridas–1-5 p.m.

Britton Rotunda
An installation of specially commissioned artwork by contemporary Artist in Residence, Humberto Spíndola, is on display in the Britton Rotunda of the Library building. Inspired by Kahlo’s double self-portrait The Two Fridas (1939), Spíndola re-creates her iconic dresses using a trompe l’oeil effect that closely resembles fabric. Special live performances with two male models posed wearing replicas of his paper dresses bring the painting to life on select dates throughout the summer and fall.

Cámara, Acción! Mexican Film Series–3 p.m.

Experience Frida Kahlo on the big screen with the Academy Award-winning film Frida, directed by Julie Taymor and starring Salma Hayek. On Sundays, a revolving series of compelling documentaries, shorts, and features takes you inside the vibrant culture of Mexico today, presented in partnership with Cinema Tropical.

Today’s Feature: FRIDA (Julie Taymor, USA, 2002, 123 min. Rated R) (English) Frida chronicles the life Frida Kahlo shared unflinchingly and openly with Diego Rivera as the young couple took the art world by storm. Frida Kahlo lived a bold and uncompromising life as a political, artistic, and sexual revolutionary.

Meet at the Reflecting Pool in the Leon Levy Visitor Center
Experience the beauty of the Garden’s 50-acre Thain Family Forest on this one-hour walking tour with an expertly trained Guide. You’ll learn facts about the trees, history, geology, and ecology of this original, uncut woodland.

Aquatic House Tour–2:30 p.m.
Meet at the entrance to the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory
Explore aquatic habitats found within the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, an acre of plants under glass. Take an eco-tour through these distinct biomes, with one of the Garden’s tour guides.

Today’s Feature: Presunto Culpable/Presumed Guilty (Roberto Hernandez & Geoffrey Smith, Mexico, 2010, 88 min. Not Rated) In December 2005, Toño Zúñiga was picked up off the street in Mexico City, Mexico, and sentenced to 20 years for murder based on the testimony of a single, shaky eyewitness. The Emmy Award-winning documentary Presumed Guilty tells the heart-wrenching story of a man who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden
Garden beds are filled with plants featured in the favorite recipes of the chefs from Mario Batali’s restaurants. Kids can explore the gardens to solve Mario’s Menu Mystery game.

Dig! Plant! Grow! The Three Sisters: Corn, Beans, Squash–1:30-6 p.m.
Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden
Plants and imaginations grow at the Howell Family Garden, where kids are allowed!—no, encouraged!—to play in the dirt. Display gardens, such as the Global Gardens and the Bean Tunnel or Salad Bowl, and daily interactive gardening activities delight and inspire. Drop-in activities end at 5:30 p.m.

Cooking with Frida–2 & 4 p.m.

Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden
Hands-on activities in the Edible Academy’s Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden bring together children and their families to experience the colors, textures, smells, and tastes of Frida Kahlo’s Mexican kitchen. Cooking demonstrations feature recipes inspired by those Frida served to family and friends, using nutritious, garden-based ingredients. Visitors can explore and tend to the plant staples of Mexican cuisine growing throughout the Family Garden: beans, tomatoes, peppers, chiles, herbs, and more!

Everett Children’s Adventure Garden
Experience the inspiration Frida Kahlo found in the natural world that can be seen and appreciated in her artwork. Throughout the Adventure Garden investigate plants and animals growing and living in New York City, using your senses as well as scientific tools to discover your own creative muse.
