Little Landscapes: Build-a-Biome in the Adventure Garden

While our Orchid Show, taking place under the glass of the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, is something of a giant floral terrarium in itself, the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden is currently home to a much more bite-sized variety thanks to Little Landscapes. This sibling program to our yearly orchid extravaganza offers your little ones a chance to get out of the March chill, settle into some activities in our Discovery Center, and come away with miniature terrariums of their own to take home and care for.
Anyway, how often do they get to create their own biomes? (And a messy room capable of supporting a thriving fungal diversity doesn’t count.)
Morning Eye Candy: Little Landscapes

This is not to be missed if you’ve got kids tagging along! While The Orchid Show is already running strong in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, there are plenty of other activities tied into it that take place elsewhere in the NYBG. Not only lectures in Ross Hall, or orchid care demonstrations in the Shop in the Garden, but kid-friendly events in the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden–that includes Little Landscapes.
Terrariums are so much more than a Tumblr fad. They’re self-contained worlds that are not only educational, but relaxing and enjoying to put together. So bring your kids for The Orchid Show and make a point of stopping off in our Adventure Garden through April 22, where they’ll have a chance to play architect with a miniature world of their own.

Little Landscapes: The World in a Jar

Gardening isn’t always a cakewalk. For New Yorkers, it can be the supreme struggle. Back yard vegetable plots are replaced with cramped fire escape terra cotta, and a window sill planter sits in for the shady garden tree. In light of the trouble with greening a studio apartment the size of your childhood closet, it’s no shock that the terrarium is coming back into vogue. And with Little Landscapes, the valedictorians of terrarium design are bringing the craze to The New York Botanical Garden.
