This Weekend: Celebrate Early Spring with Three Days of Family Programs!

NYBG crocus early springThis weekend, NYBG kicks off the spring blooming season with three days of Orchid Show programs, brisk walks, and interactive family fun! That’s right, we are open on Monday, April 6—so come celebrate the holiday and share the Garden with your loved ones!

Dig! Plant Grow! is back, just in time for kids to enjoy playing outside again, with a new session entitled Wake Up, Garden! The Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden is filled with interactive gardening fun, while in the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden, Little Landscapes continues through Monday. Monday promises to be absolutely gorgeous, so we have two brisk walking tours scheduled to enhance your experience of the Native Plant Garden and the Thain Family Forest, the two areas of the Garden that best showcase the beauty of our region at all times of year. See the full schedule of upcoming tours and begin planning your time in the sun.

Meanwhile, The Orchid Show: Chandeliers continues through April 19, so don’t miss your chance to see this soaring floral display and enjoy the fragrance of thousands of orchids filling the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory. Only four Orchid Evenings remain if you’re looking to plan the perfect evening with someone special.

Saturday, April 4
Enid A Haupt Conservatory NYBG

Roaming Guide – 10 a.m.–4 p.m.
In the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory
Garden guides highlight parts of the permanent collection and special exhibition to add insight to your experience of The Orchid Show. They will provide an in-depth look at rare and extraordinary orchid specimens on display.

Bird Walk – 11 a.m.
Meet by the Reflecting Pool
Bring your binoculars and tour the grounds with a National Audubon Society member to encounter and learn about the birds that call the Garden home.

Bronx Arts Ensemble Family Concert: Hansel and Gretel – 12 & 1:30 p.m.
In the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden
Hansel and Gretel sing, dance, juggle, and do slapstick to tell the famous story of the pair meeting the Witch in the forest with a wonderful gingerbread house. Animated actors perform to live music played by the Bronx Arts Ensemble musicians. The audience will be introduced to each instrument and join in the adventure!

Join us at upcoming family-friendly cultural activities and programs as part of “It’s Your Garden,” a program of community outreach presented by JPMorgan Chase & Co. Children’s activities, demonstrations, live performances, and more are all part of the lineup this spring and summer for “It’s Your Garden.” And that’s not all—information about access to career training opportunities, job openings, and educational programs for kids, teens, and adults will also be available.

Ballroom’s Best: Tango, Waltz, and Cha-Cha – 1 & 3 p.m.
In Ross Hall
Dancers from Ballet Hispanico’s BHdos troupe lead audiences through dances such as the waltz, tango, mambo and cha-cha are gorgeously costumed and choreographed. A guided instruction gives you insights on how to master the moves yourself.

Orchid Expert Q&A – 1:30–4:30 p.m.
Shop in the Garden
Drop in and ask about orchid care tips. Plants in need of care will be available as testers so that you can learn how top repot and replant.

Orchid Care Demonstrations: Orchid ABC’s – 2 & 3 p.m.
Join Sonia Uyterhoeven, Gardener for Public Education, as she discusses the basics of orchid care and how to choose and successfully grow these exotic plants

Orchid Evenings – 6:30–9 p.m.
In the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory
Enjoy a cocktail while viewing The Orchid Show and its thousands of spectacular flowers. The unforgettable beauty makes for one of New York City’s most romantic date destinations. While taking in the elegance of the show, stop for quick lipstick touch-ups by one of Guerlain’s famed make-up artists, and indulge in a specialty cocktail inspired by Guerlain’s Orchidée Impériale line.
Non-Member $30/Member $20 (Adults 21 and over)
Advance tickets recommended; includes one complimentary beer, wine, or cocktail of your choice.

Native Plant Garden Tour – 12:30 p.m.
Meet at the Reflecting Pool at the Leon Levy Visitor Center
Join a tour guide for an insider’s view of the newly designed Native Plant Garden. Enjoy a mosaic of nearly 100,000 native trees, wildflowers, ferns and grasses designed to flourish in every season.

Meet at the Reflecting Pool in the Leon Levy Visitor Center
Experience the beauty of the Garden’s 50-acre Thain Family Forest on this one-hour walking tour with an expertly trained Guide. You’ll learn facts about the trees, history, geology, and ecology of this original, uncut woodland.

Ongoing Children’s Programs
Ross Conifer Arboretum New York Botanical Garden

Little Landscapes – 10 a.m.–5:30 p.m.
In the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden
Pot up a desert plant inside a terrarium container and craft a figurine to inhabit your tiny world. Compare your habitat to terrarium displays in the Discovery Center and explore our life-size terrarium—the Bendheim Global Greenhouse.

Dig! Plant! Grow! – 1:30 p.m.–6 p.m.
Wake Up, Garden!

In the Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden
Plants and imaginations grow at the Howell Family Garden, where kids are allowed!—no, encouraged!—to play in the dirt. Display gardens, such as the Global Gardens and the Bean Tunnel or Salad Bowl, and daily interactive gardening activities delight and inspire. Drop-in activities end at 5:30 p.m.
