No, this crepe myrtle isn’t named for its stinginess. It’s actually quite generous with its flowers! But it’s also very compact.

Note the almost unseen lavender edging. “Stunning subtlety” might be an accurate oxymoron in this instance.

A Japanese plum blossom wakes in the Ladies’ Border. I’m thinking the cherry blossoms can’t be all that far behind. Happy Sunday!

The Viburnum is giving us a peek at future spring color in the Ladies’ Border, joining the crocuses, Adonis, and other early season go-getters as a reminder that the new season really has kicked off.

The Ladies’ Border shows immeasurable spring promise right now, what with these fuzzy wonders just beginning their bloom. It’s often referred to as oriental paperbush, though I personally prefer the alternate: “Mitsumata.” It’s one of the plant species used in the making of the Japanese tissue paper of the same name.

Of all the terrible Bogart references on all the blogs in all the world, you clicked into mine. Still, I hope this Peruvian lily makes up for it! You’ll find it brightening the Ladies’ Border on this summer Sunday.

I think I’m on a certified dragonfly kick after perusing Thomas Andres’ collection of bug shots from earlier this week. Ivo follows up with what may be the cutest representative of the Odonata class taking a breather on a leaf in the Ladies’ Border.

Sometimes I’ll come across something that looks like a sorbet, a baked tart, or a platter of colorful petit fours, knowing full well that nature usually does a better job of making things look “good enough to eat” than the local confectioner. Not that the poison control hotline would humor me if I acted on all of these novel compulsions, but, hey, it’s just a thought.
