Come visit the Garden this weekend to see a very special presentation occurring in Ross Hall this Saturday, a part of FRIDA KAHLO: Art, Garden, Life. You’ll get to meet Mixtec weavers on their first trip to New York as they demonstrate the ancient art of weaving textiles using dye produced by an endangered purple sea snail. Only a handful of artisans possess the skills to harness the dye! After the presentation, their work will be available for purchase at Shop in the Garden.
We’ll also be featuring live music and dance from acclaimed performers Jarana Beat, a band that mixes Afro-Amerindian Mexican sounds with activist messages. You can also find screenings of films that celebrate the art and culture of Mexico. So grab your friends and family and head over to the Garden this weekend, and see for yourself what everyone is talking about!

Conservatory, which re-imagines her home and garden, the Casa Azul, in Mexico City. Then visit the Mertz Library and view an exquisitely curated collection of rarely seen paintings by Frida Kahlo.
Hungry? Make reservations to the Hudson Garden Grill–equal parts picturesque and delicious. As of this week, the full-service farm-to-table restaurant at the Garden has an updated Frida-inspired menu designed by Chef Julian Alonzo.

¡Viva la Frida! Celebrate the life and spirit of Frida Kahlo during this weekend’s bevy of Frida-filled festivities, which just so happen to cap off the week of the artist’s birthday!
You’ll definitely run into Frida and Diego, a few times over…well at least their doppelgangers, during the much anticipated Look-Alike Contest on Saturday. See a parade of Fridas and Diegos showing off their finest attire inspired by the colorful duo and vote for your favorite at the Conservatory Plaza!
Throughout the weekend, enjoy live music and dance at the Conservatory Plaza. Get crafty and create a beautiful flower crown inspired by the artist’s legendary fashion savvy at the Conservatory Lawn, then hop over to the Visitor Center to watch famed street artist Bradley Theodore create a mural in front of your eyes.
And kids will love the giant monarch butterfly puppets moving throughout the Garden, designed by internationally-known Bronx artist Lucrecia Novoa.
Although the Frida al Fresco Evening on Saturday is sold out, we encourage you to come back during a future night to experience the exhibition in a dramatically different light!
Sunday happens to be the day that we show Dad how much we care, but NYBG’s starting things early with a Saturday night event! Tickets are still available for the Canciones de mi Padre (Songs of My Father) Concert on Saturday, June 20. This evening concert features The Villalobos Brothers and Humberto Flores, as well as Mexican soprano Gizel Xanath. La Casa Azul Taco Truck will be open, or you can enjoy the perfect Frida al Fresco evening by making a reservation at Hudson Garden Grill (final reservations at 5:45 p.m. unless otherwise noted) for a full-service dining experience in our newly opened restaurant. Each Frida al Fresco ticket includes a complimentary Modelo Especial draft cerveza or Jose Cuervo Tradicional margarita!

We’re at the tail end of one of the coldest Februaries on record, the snow pack on our lawns is thick enough to keep the plants nicely insulated, and you can visit the equator by setting foot in our Haupt Conservatory. One of those things is not like the other—I know. But this Saturday marks the public opening of The Orchid Show for 2015, and it could not be more tropical in there. It’s plenty warm, the humidity’s up (especially compared to what you’re dealing with in your city apartment, I imagine), and everyone is welcome to join us for some much-needed color and life.
There’ll be plenty of additional events and activities open to you when you stop by, too, including tours, orchid care demonstrations for greenthumbs new and old, dance lessons, and fun for kids. September has kicked off to a beautiful start here at NYBG, which means there is still time to snap those enviable summer photos with your friends and family. From our Aquatic House to Mario Batali’s Kitchen Gardens, the scenery is so magnificent that a filter won’t be necessary.
Unlike the Garden’s luster, not everything across the 250 acres is everlasting. This weekend marks the end of the Garden-wide summer exhibition Groundbreakers: Great American Gardens and The Women Who Designed Them. With all of the Haupt Conservatory’s flowers and set pieces still looking as fresh as they did on day one, good luck not getting caught daydreaming of a sunny stroll through the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Garden in Maine. As one of the last gasps of summer, Labor Day weekend is a chance for NYBG to throw open its gates on a Monday and welcome everyone for what tends to be the closing week of our summer exhibition. And this year, things are no different—we’re rapidly approaching the September 7 end of our Groundbreakers exhibition! If you haven’t found a moment to get away and visit us here in the Bronx, now’s as good a time as any and maybe even better.
Those of you with kids in tow will be happy to know that we’re going full-tilt in the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden with our SousaKazooza events, the last of the season. Bring your little ones for some music, marching, and crafts to keep them busy. And for the adults, we’re still offering our full suite of Groundbreakers events alongside a sweeping schedule of tours—Azalea Garden, Rock Garden, Conservatory, Native Plant Garden and Garden Highlights among them—to help you make the most of your afternoon.

We’re well into a relatively mild summer here at NYBG, which means evenings make for one of the best times to get outside and relax! To that end, we’re prepping the Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden and all its plush vegetable beds for the first of this year’s series of Family Dinners with Mario Batali’s Chefs. We’re breaking out the tablecloths, the grill’s being readied, and you’ll find plenty of hands-on crafts and activities waiting for your kids when you get here.
This weekend’s opening dinner event will be helmed by Chef Josh Laurano of Lupa and Chef Dan Drohan of Otto, who are teaming up to create three decadent courses to remember. Among the items on this weekend’s menu, you’ll find green beans with prosciutto, mozzarella, and cherry tomatoes; eggplant parmagiano with bianca aglio olio; mint and lemon semolina cake; and more. Don’t worry about wine, either—we’ve got a pair of options selected to perfectly complement the dishes.
