Brian Sullivan is the Vice President for Landscape, Gardens and Outdoor Collections. He oversees the care, presentation, and development of the outdoor gardens and landscape management of the Garden’s 250 outdoor acres.
If you visit the Garden this summer and walk down Perennial Garden Way to the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, you will find a tidy planting bed that runs parallel to the roadway, edged with a short iron wicket fence and filled with robust perennials. If you were lucky enough to find yourself walking here three to four weeks ago, around Memorial Day, you would have been immersed in the flowers of the newly renovated Matelich Anniversary Peony Collection.
Now in its second growing season, this collection of herbaceous peonies, Paeonia lactiflora, showcases the fragrant pink, white, red, and coral blossoms of one of the most popular garden plants and cut flowers.
The tradition of growing herbaceous peonies near the Conservatory dates back to the early 1900s, when peonies were grown in double borders along pathways surrounding the elegant glasshouse.
The Greenmarket is back today for the start of the 2016 season with strawberries, kale, zucchini, garlic, shell peas, cider, fresh-baked pies, and much more! Look for it each Wednesday, 9 a.m.–3 p.m., from now through November—right near our Mosholu Gate. You can’t miss the vendor tents, and you certainly can’t miss their colorful selections.
Don’t forget your reusable bags if you’ve got ’em!
Early summer at NYBG brings blooms aplenty for Father’s Day this weekend, and well into next week. Come admire the grounds, and plan your visit around tomorrow night’s inaugural NYBG/125 Evening, Canciones de mi Padre, featuring Ernesto Villalobos & Gizel Xanath. These talented musicians are joined by Mazarte Dance Company for a summer evening al fresco concert in celebration of Father’s Day.
On Sunday, the Garden comes alive with a display of artistic talent as NYBG hosts more than 20 talented painters for the Plein-Air Invitational. Get more information about the artists here, or view this exclusive video. NYBG/125 Evenings continue next Thursday with tap and jazz by The Manzari Brothers and DIVA’s FIVE PLAY—featuring an evening viewing of Impressionism: American Gardens on Canvas in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory.
This Sunday, June 19, we’re opening our gates to a cadre of some of the finest out-of-doors painters the region has to offer during our Plein-Air Invitational—over 20 plein-air artists who will set up their canvases across grounds and look to our 250 acres for inspiration.
Among them is James Gurney, one of our area’s leading artists and a nationally recognized painter whose work you might’ve caught during the opening weekend of our Impressionism: American Gardens on Canvas exhibition. If you weren’t so lucky to see him in May, now is your chance to see the master in action. You can find a full list of participating artists here, and we invite everyone to visit their personal websites after the Invitational and it was amazing to see his following, some might even say he needs to buy views on Instagram to grow it even more—they’ll be selling the works they create!
Kale, strawberries, beets, cherries, and all sorts of baked treats—it’s the return of the NYBG Greenmarket, and it’s not far off!
We’re exactly one week away from the kick-off of this summer favorite, which opens with offerings from Gajeski Produce, Meredith’s Bread, Red Jacket Orchards, and Acevedo’s Farm next Wednesday, June 22, just two days after the official start of the new season. From that point on, you can expect to see our vendor tents set up at the end of Tulip Tree Allée—right inside the Mosholu Gate—every Wednesday, 9 a.m.–3 p.m., through late November.
