NYBG Literary Audio Tour – Sorry No Limericks

Posted in People, Video on August 9 2011, by Plant Talk

Early this year, the New York Botanical Garden partnered with National Book Foundation and Poetry Society of America to create a literary element to our audio tours. With support from an award from the National Endowment for the Arts, we reached out to a number of NYC-based authors and poets and asked them to produce works based on their experiences or certain areas of the Garden.

Below you can see one of our contributors for the summer: author Ana Boži?evi? who chose the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden as her inspiriation for her work, Rose Hopscotch.

You can access the audio tour two ways:

Using your cell phone, call 718.362.9561 and type in the number next to the audio tour symbol on signs throughout the Garden grounds. You can even call from home if you’d like.

What do you think of the new Audio Literary Tour? Are there any NYC-based authors you’d like to see for upcoming seasons? Leave us a comment and let us know!

Hear how Mario Batali uses pine nuts, learn how to cook zucchini flowers, find out how to use sweet potatoes in desserts, and garner more culinary tips by tuning in to the informative Celebrity Chef Audio Tour.

Augment your visitor experience during The Edible Garden by listening to several chefs, including Dan Barber, Michael Psilakis, and Sara Moulton, discuss a variety of delectable fruits and vegetables—how they grow and how you can use them in cooking.

You’ll also hear gardening advice from Botanical Garden staff members Annie Novak, coordinator of the Children’s Gardening Program, and Karen Daubmann, Director of Exhibitions and Seasonal Displays.

Do you have a story of your own about a particular vegetable or fruit that you’d like to share? Leave a message for others to hear. You can get links to recipes and growing tips sent directly to your cell phone as well.

To listen to the audio tour, look for the audio tour symbol and phone number on signs throughout the Garden grounds or call from home, 718.362.9561. Enter the prompt number you wish to listen to followed by the # key. (For instance, Mario Batali on pine nuts is 240#). Enter another prompt number at any time followed by the # key.

Excitement Builds Working with Star Chefs for The Edible Garden

Jennifer Rothman is Associate Vice President of Children’s and Public Education.

mario-headshot_melanie-duneaWhen the idea for The Edible Garden—our summer-long celebration of growing great food that begins June 27—began floating around, to say I was excited about the prospect of planning such an event is an understatement. You see, I am a bit of a foodie. When I’m not at work, I spend a lot of time thinking about food, cooking food, talking about food, reading about food…you get the picture. Now, after months of organizing this spectacular show, when I stand back and look at the lineup of celebrity chefs and gardeners who are featured, I keep thinking that if I didn’t work here, I would be the first person on line for tickets.

I mean, the chefs that are participating are “first-name famous”—Mario, Lidia, Martha—and at the top in their field. My Food Network favorites such as Daisy Martinez and Aida Mollenkamp are coming, too, as are the preeminent chefs of the local food movement like Dan Barber, who was just named James Beard Chef of the Year, and Peter Hoffman, a founding father of the movement.

Just last week I had the pleasure of being in the recording studio with Mario Batali while he recorded the narrations for our Edible Audio Tour. He was such a pro, finishing in less than an hour, and he couldn’t have been nicer. He told me that he and his family were big fans of The New York Botanical Garden and that they were excited to come visit this summer.
