Ann Novak is the Manager of the Edible Academy at The New York Botanical Garden.
Our lettuce transplants are getting bigger every day, snappy radish roots are turning red under the soil, and the peas are starting to vine. It’s time for Salad Days at the Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden! Shakespeare called a person’s youth “salad days” for a reason: these are the sweetest days of the year, when everything seems possible. Especially a delicious salad! We’re in our last week of this wonderful program, which ends on Friday, June 5.
To learn more about all the crops in our plots, dig in with the staff in the Family Garden. We’re excited about our first harvest of the season and celebrating salads in all sorts of ways. Visitors can create a paper plate salad to learn more about plant parts as we make art. Measure and mix the dried herbs you need to take home a salad dressing to finish and enjoy at home. Explore the garden with a scavenger hunt learning more about the plant parts that make up a salad.

Monday promises to be absolutely gorgeous, so we have two brisk walking tours scheduled to enhance your experience of the Native Plant Garden and the Thain Family Forest, the two areas of the Garden that best showcase the beauty of our region at all times of year. We are all very excited for a bright weekend after such a rainy week. Of course, the plants loved all that water—and it seems fitting that this weekend features two special tours of the Aquatic House! While the city is drying out, visit the wettest habitats in the Conservatory and admire the gorgeous plants within.
Don’t forget, next week is the last of our Jazz Age Evenings. On August 21 we bid farewell to these vintage-style soirées that brought such glamour and joy to Groundbreakers. Join us for the big bash as Michael Arenella & His Dreamland Orchestra transports guests back to the 40s with a swinging songbook inspired by the “Greatest Generation.” Our friends at Crabbie’s Alcoholic Ginger Beer will be serving up their own spicy twist on that classic summer cocktail—the Margarita.
Be sure to bring the kids this weekend for the Global Gardens Summer Harvest Celebration in the Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden! This weekend only, children will explore five Global Gardens and fill up their passports while enjoying activities. Click through for more details and the full program schedule.

Bring the little ones on Sunday for the debut of next month’s theme for Dig! Plant! Grow! The Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden will play host to a month of pickling activities to let you embark on a tasty new project at home with the family.

The Antique Garden Furniture Fair opens to the public this weekend, with a full roster of exciting talks and booksignings! Come peruse the wares in the Conservatory Tent throughout Saturday and Sunday, including our own Specialty Plant Sale. For home decor inspiration, visit our series of fascinating Q&A sessions with visiting experts. Even better, home delivery is available for all purchases.
It is also quite a weekend for art lovers at the Garden with our Triennial exhibition, Weird, Wild, & Wonderful open to great acclaim. Prepare to be amazed by how the most talented botanical artists interpret the world’s most bizarre-looking plants in the Ross Gallery.
There are still plenty of ways for children to enjoy the Garden this weekend as well. Mario Batali’s Kitchen Gardens will use the growing season to guide kids through an exploration of Italian heirloom vegetables to encourage healthy and delicious eating. Dig! Plant! Grow! returns with a new program, too, investigating Wild Wiggly Worms and how they help gardens flourish.
The grounds are enjoying a truly spectacular blooming season. The magnolia and cherry trees are flowering at the same time, blanketing the Garden in white and pink. Click through for our weekend programs, including the Antique Garden Furniture Fair!
