The Garden’s current exhibition, Wild Medicine in the Tropics, located in the warm rain forest and desert galleries of the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory at NYBG, is full of surprises about the healing power of medicinal plants and their importance for human health.
One of the biggest surprises is the fact that 25 percent of our prescription medicines—including many of today’s life-saving, well-known products—come from plant ingredients. The exhibition highlights dozens of plant species for their impact in promoting health or fighting disease.
The Greenmarket is back today, with fresh produce each week throughout the fall season. Today’s breakout star is certainly the apples, perhaps New York State’s most popular produce. With only two weeks until the official first day of fall, today’s Greenmarket looks as delectable as ever. Ginger gold apples, eggplants, spaghetti squashes, and pipicha—an aromatic herb from Mexico that closely resembles tarragon—are all lined up and ready to make your kitchen their new home.
Spaghetti squash is undoubtedly one of the most unique foods you’ll come across at the Greenmarket. This melon-shaped winter squash is named for its flesh that looks like translucent strands of thin spaghetti when cooked. Not only is the flavor mild and delicate, but also spaghetti squash is loaded with nutrients and its seeds can be roasted like those of pumpkins. For beginners, just adding garlic can turn a squash into a highly versatile side dish that kids will love!

Habanero chilies, with their citrus-like flavor and floral aroma, are an integral part of Yucatecan cuisine. Daunting reputation aside, the habanero’s heat mixes nicely with sweet. Wednesdays mean free grounds-only admission to the Garden, and of course the return of the NYBG Greenmarket. This week our specialty vendors are offering okra, purple basil, red amaranth, eggplants, cantaloupe, potatoes, and more! Just in time too, because we have really been working up an appetite reading the special menus that have been announced for our series of Family Dinners with Mario Batali’s Chefs. These visiting luminaries of Italian cuisine are using the freshly grown produce of the Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden to prepare some garden-to-table recipes that sound absolutely delicious.

One popular classic makes use of two ingredients in season at the moment—strawberries and rhubarb! What does a bean with a good imagination look like? If you’ve got the same tastes as Dr. Seuss then the ‘Red Noodle’ Bean or the ‘Yard-Long bean should be right up your alley. We have grown the former for several years in our vegetable garden, and usually just eat it straight off the vine—it’s so sweet and tasty. But it stays crunchier if you cook it, whether stir fried or steamed. Boiling, however, isn’t recommended—these beans get water-logged and tasteless.
‘Red Noodle’ (Vigna unguiculata) is, as the name suggests, a burgundy red color. What is exceptional about the bean (aside from its brilliant color) is that its average size is 18 inches long. It looks more like a jumbo Twizzler than anything you’d normally call a healthy bean. And, like most beans, the smaller, slender ones are the most tender—try to harvest when they are about 12 inches long and still slim.
November is always a double-edged sword for us, as it means two things: the Greenmarket is stocked with heaps of fresh, hearty fall fare—some of my favorite foods of the year—and the Greenmarket is nearly over. Including today’s event, there are just three more opportunities to stock up on produce and baked goodies until our vendors close up shop for the year on Wednesday, November 27.
Today’s highlights include onions and peppers and apples galore (Cortland, Jonagold, Macoun, McIntosh, and Red Delicious varieties among them). You’ll also find broccoli, root vegetables in abundance, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, winter squashes of all sorts, tomatoes, and, of course, heaps of pies from Meredith’s Bread. Among them, a newcomer: coconut custard pie! And the usual suspects, too—apple crumb, cherry, pecan, and precious, precious pumpkin.
It was snowing yesterday morning. If that doesn’t tell you you need to stock up on stew ingredients and eat your fill of baked deliciousness, I don’t know what will. The NYBG Greenmarket runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each Wednesday through November 27. The market accepts food stamps, EBT, WIC/FMNP, and Senior coupons, in addition to cash and credit or debit cards.
