Composting Programs

Bronx Green-Up is part of the New York City Compost Project, created in 1993 and funded by the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY). The program provides compost education and outreach to New York City residents and businesses, offers the Master Composter Certificate Program, and provides assistance through the biannual Compost Givebacks events.

Master Composter Certificate Program. This comprehensive “train-the-trainer” course is designed to promote the practice of composting in home and community gardens. Offered each spring, the program consists of six Tuesday evening classes, two Saturday field trips, and 30 hours of volunteer outreach service in compost education and promotion. For an application and course details, contact Bronx Green-Up at 718.817.8543 or bronxgreenup@nybg.org. Brochures and applications may also be downloaded online.

Compost Givebacks and Bin Sales. At these annual spring and fall events, compost made from leaves and chipped Christmas trees collected by the NYC Department of Sanitation is given back to New York City residents for free. In addition, backyard compost bins are made available to New York City residents at a deeply discounted rate. Please visit www.nyccompost.org for more details, or call the Rotline at 718.817.8543.

Compost Demonstration Site at the Botanical Garden’s Home Gardening Center.  This self-guided, visual display provides and introduction to the different stages of composting and to the types of bins suitable for home and community gardeners. Master Composters frequently conduct compost question-and-answer sessions at the site, offering visitors the practical tips, advice, and encouragement they need to take composting to the next level.
