Exploring NYC’s Ecological Past: Teaching with The Welikia Project & Layers of the Past

April 25, 2026

10 a.m. to 1 p.m. | Mertz Library Reading Room

How did New York City’s landscapes, waterways, and biodiversity look before modern urban development, and how can understanding this history transform how we teach about nature today?

Join NYBG’s Urban Conservation Program for a dynamic, 3-hour professional learning workshop designed for formal and informal educators across New York City. Participants will explore The Welikia Project and Layers of the Past, innovative digital tools that bring New York City’s ecological history to life. Through a blend of indoor and outdoor learning experiences, educators will examine how the city’s environment and human relationships with nature have evolved over more than 400 years.
