Flower Power Dress-Up Day

Break out your bell bottoms, floppy hats, and fringed vests! Flower Power Dress-Up Day is your chance to show off your best hippie styles at NYBG—and maybe even win some prizes. Wear your best and most colorful ’60s-inspired outfits for a day of live music, crafts like making friendship bracelets, and a dress-up contest where judges choose the grooviest looks among a series of categories.

The first 100 visitors who arrive dressed up get seed packets from Hudson Valley Seed Co. This day only, visitors who come dressed up will receive a 20% discount voucher at NYBG Shop (does not stack with Membership discount). Visitors will need to purchase an All-Garden Pass to enter the Garden.

Dress for the occasion and bring your ’60s best! Walk the runway for our judges for a chance at prizes. Winners among the below categories will leave with gifts from NYBG Shop.

    (Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Beatles, etc.)

Sing along to ’60s favorites and enjoy contemporary, original works by a rotating lineup of New York City folk musicians inspired not only by the Greenwich Village folk scene, but also lesser-known genres of the period.

11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Perennial Garden

Drawing from rich Mayan weaving traditions, these natural fiber bracelets found their way onto the wrists of young Americans in the 1960s. Learn how to weave a simple design for yourself or a friend to take home a memento from your visit to Flower Power.

Channel the spirit of the ’60s at Flower Power, a joyous celebration of the enduring symbolism of flowers as icons of peace and love. Immerse yourself in a groovy and colorful flower show spotlighting the ways in which hippie culture advanced closer relationships with the natural world, and explore vibrant botanical displays. NYBG’s galleries showcase photography and visual art from the 1960s, while installations on grounds invite all of us to “come together” and be empowered to embrace flowers as symbols in our own lives.
