Before New York: Manhattan Opening Reception

September 1, 2026

5:30 to 7 p.m. | Pier 57

Hosted by Pier 57, please join the New York Botanical Garden for the Manhattan opening reception of Before New York, a traveling pop‑up exhibition that reconstructs New York City’s ecological past as it existed in 1609. Through large‑scale photographs, digital renderings, and immersive soundscapes, the exhibition highlights the borough’s original forests, wetlands, and waterways, and illustrates how these ecosystems shaped the region’s biodiversity and supported the Indigenous Lenape people for millennia.

The Manhattan installation invites visitors to uncover the borough’s ecological history and explore how these past landscapes inform today’s challenges related to flooding, climate resilience, and environmental justice. This ticketed reception marks the launch of the Manhattan installation and brings together partners, collaborators, and supporters. Light refreshments will be served.
