Celebrate the opening of Van Gogh’s Flowers among spring’s abundant color
Join us for opening weekend of our summer exhibition with a wide variety of events and activities, including drop-in painting workshops and professional artists offering live demonstrations in the Garden. After you’ve explored the botanical displays and large-scale art of Van Gogh’s Flowers indoors and out, be sure to grab a light bite or drink for purchase from one of our pop-up bars.

During Van Gogh’s Flowers Opening Weekend, step into a vibrant flower truck blooming with the LEGO® Botanicals collection on display—designed to spark joy and inspire unexpected surprises for those you love. Explore the power of connection and creativity with a hands-on, make-and-take experience including a mini-Vincent van Gogh sunflower creation. This activation is first-come, first-served and while supplies last.

To mark the opening of the exhibition and the Garden’s rites of spring, we invite plein-air artists to bring their easels and paints to gather across select areas of the grounds to paint NYBG’s collections.

Van Gogh reflects on his love for nature in his letter to his brother Theo. Find YOUR love of nature by picking up a complimentary pencil set and paper canvas before seeking out inspiration from our 250-acre landscape.

Perennial Garden
“I dream my painting and I paint my dream.”
Drop in and paint the Perennial Garden with guided instruction by our visiting teaching artist, Lindsay Robbins. Take a piece of art home with you inspired by NYBG’s living collections.
Lindsay Robbins is the co-founder of NYC Nature Drawing Club—a gathering of folks of all ages and abilities, all inspired by the natural world. Take part in a guided open drawing session focused on a wide array of NYBG’s living collections and inspired by Van Gogh’s brush strokes. Drawing materials will be provided, but you are also welcome to bring your own.

Observe an artist at work in an open-air studio! Professional artist Carlos Wilfredo Encarnación creates a work before your eyes over the course of the weekend. Observe how Encarnación seeks inspiration from the natural world that inspired Vincent van Gogh.

Carlos W. Encarnación received his BA from CUNY Lehman Herbert College and his MFA from CUNY-The City College of New York, where he was awarded the Bernard Levinson Award and the Connor Fellowship, respectively. His works range from drawings and paintings to sculptures and mixed-media that explore topics such as nostalgia, identity, and cultural heritage. He currently lives and works in the Bronx, NY.
