Each year, NYBG places undergraduate, high school, and post graduate students in paid plant science internships. Interns work directly with Garden scientists and participate in cutting-edge research on plant diversity, molecular biology, systematics, taxonomy, morphology, development, and/or bioinformatics. Internships offer firsthand experience in plant research, they allow students to explore their interests in science, and they provide excellent educational experiences to include in resumes.
Part-time school year internships are available during fall and spring semesters for New York City students through NYBG’s participation in the Sci Network NYC. In addition, a small number of summer internships may also be available. The summer internship program includes participation in enrichment activities such as facilities tours, botanical research seminars, discussions of career opportunities, and skills workshops.
The Application Process
Initial inquiries and internship applications must be submitted through NYBG’s Human Resources Department (hr@nybg.org). Please follow information at this link for availability and postings. School year internship opportunities are generally posted in July and August.
Qualifications
Important qualifications for NYBG Science Interns include the following:
• Current enrollment in high school or college degree program
• Interest in plant science, passion for learning new things
• Good interpersonal skills and willing to be a team player
• Responsible, punctual, professional, motivated, and self-starter
• Laboratory research positions require safety training as part of the onboarding process
Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit a cover letter explaining their interest in science, what they would like to gain through an internship in science, and why they would like to intern at the New York Botanical Garden.
Unpaid Volunteer Opportunities
In rare circumstances, unpaid internships may be permitted with documentation that interns receive course credit or fulfill a requirement of their academic program. In this case, inquiries should be directed to NYBG’s Volunteer Services department (volunteer@nybg.org).
