Systematics of Symplocos

Lawrence M. Kelly

Symplocos consists of 318 species of trees and shrubs that primarily grow in montane habitats. The genus is divided between America and Asia, with slightly more species in Asia. The purpose of this ongoing project is to produce taxonomic revisions of the American species of Symplocos for selected areas. Treatments have been produced for the Flora of Chiapas and Flora Mesoamericana, and a revision of the Mexican and Central American members of Symplocos is underway. The project is a collaborative effort with colleagues at the California Academy of Sciences, with the eventual aim of producing a monograph of the neotropical species of Symplocos.
