James Gurney

James Gurney is the author and illustrator of the New York Times-bestselling Dinotopia book series. He designed the World of Dinosaurs stamps for the U.S. Postal Service and has worked on over a dozen assignments for National Geographic magazine, painting reconstructions of Moche, Kushite, and Etruscan civilizations. He has won the Hugo, Chesley, Spectrum, and World Fantasy Awards. Solo exhibitions of his artwork have been presented at the Smithsonian Institution, the Norman Rockwell Museum, and the Norton Museum of Art. Dance Performance

Juxtaposing the dancers of Dances for a Variable Population with one of the Garden's historic flowering collections helps emphasize the value of beauty and aging in both people and places. The Phoenix Project's artful presentation engages community members in dance programs and exposes new audiences to this expression of inspiration from the Garden.

Plein Air Painting

Along Lilac Collection Paths and Rose Garden Overlook

Borrow materials to create your own masterpiece. On Sunday, June 5, renowned painter James Gurney sets up his easel at the Rose Garden, and offers insights into the joys and challenges of painting out-of-doors. Watch him create inspired works of art from blank canvas to finished masterpiece during the course of the day. He interacts with visitors as he works, sharing inspiration and information on this particular genre.
