Special Rose Day: The Great Rosarians of the World™ East Lecture Series

The Great Rosarians of the World™ East Lecture Series addresses recent progress on the emerging world of nospray, sustainable rose gardening. Learn about disease-resistant rose varieties now available as well as cutting-edge, environment-friendly techniques to grow great roses. A full day of lectures and other programs about roses includes the following:

- 9:30 a.m. Opening Remarks by Todd Forrest, Arthur Ross Vice President for Horticulture and Living Collections
- 10-10:45 a.m. An Update on the EarthKind™ Trials Lecture by Gaye Hammond
- 10:45 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Sustainable, Disease-Resistant Varieties, Now and in the Future - Panel discussion moderated by Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden Curator Peter Kukielski with a distinguished panel of national and international rose hybridizers
- 1-2:30 p.m. Lunch on your own followed by a tour of Monet’s Garden in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory
- 3-4:30 p.m. Award Ceremony Lecture by Great Rosarians of the World™ East 2012 Honoree Alain Meilland
- 4:30-5:30 p.m. Tour the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden

Rose Pruning Workshop

March 24, 12-3:30 p.m.

Learn the secrets of having beautiful roses in your garden. Find out how to easily and quickly prune and care for theses beauties. This class offers practical advice on how and where to plant roses as well as which types can grow best in your garden. Bring work gloves and pruners, and dress comfortably for work and weather. Meet at the Rose Garden, a 20 minute walk from the Conservatory Gate.

Heirloom Roses

June 5, 4:30-6:30 p.m. Rain date: June 12, 4:30-6:30 p.m.

Heirloom roses were largely abandoned when modern hybrids came on the scene, but they have made a strong comeback in recent years. Learn about the origins of these robust, disease resistant roses, which are the best for your garden, where to site them, and how to care for them. The course takes place in the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden, a 10-minute walk from the Conservatory Gate. Dress for the weather.

The Rose De-mystified

June 9, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Learn to select and grow roses for your own garden in this introductory course. Explore landscape use and care of different types-hybrid teas, shrub roses, and climbers. Learn techniques for pruning, pest and weed control, irrigation, and winter protection. Weather permitting, tour the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden.

Going Green with Roses 

June 16, 1-5 p.m.

You've succumbed to the charms of the rose and now want a few in your garden, but you want to succeed without the use of harsh chemicals and fertilizers. Peter Kukielski, the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden Curator, will teach management practices for the rose garden from a sustainable perspective, including disease and insect prevention and choosing the best varieties possible to achieve success at home. An overview of hybridization efforts currently going on around the world will be followed by a visit to the Rose Garden.

June 9 and 10, 2 p.m. Life is Rosy

Join Gardener for Public Education Sonia Uyterhoeven as she takes you on a tour of the sumptuous, award-winning Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden. She will cover standard rose care practice from fertilizing to pruning.

June 16 and 17, 2 p.m. Stop and Smell the Roses

By mid-June, the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden is in full bloom. Join Gardener for Public Education Sonia Uyterhoeven for an exploration of the Rose Garden and a look at some of the highlights of the season.
