Celebrate a Sunday full of art and beauty as sunflower season hits its peak at NYBG! Explore the floral displays of Van Gogh’s Flowers to find your muse, then grab a watercolor set to put your inspiration to paper. Throughout the day, enjoy the wandering handmade pollinator puppets of Mascara Viva, and join fiber artist J Hann as they recreate a sunflower using colorful textiles.

Beginning at noon for the event opening, the first 100 visitors will get their very own cut sunflower to take home—a perfect reason to get here as Sunflower Sunday kicks off!

Pollinator Puppet

Sunflowers attract many pollinators, including the North American Monarch. We invite you to admire and take a photo with Lucrecia Novoa’s monarch butterfly puppet as it flits throughout the hundreds of sunflowers featured in Van Gogh’s Flowers. Learn more about Lucrecia Novoa of Mascara Viva here.

Artist at Work: Sunflowers

11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Visitor Center

Watch an artist at work! Stop by the artist’s open-air studio to see how creative professionals working in a variety of mediums seek inspiration from the natural world that inspired Vincent van Gogh’s timeless masterpieces. For Sunflower Sunday, puppeteer and fiber artist J Hann will recreate the celebrated flower using textiles. Their unique textural work draws inspiration from the past and is centered in the weird, wonderful, and whimsical. J uses traditional craft work including felting, crochet, and embroidery to create fantastical worlds highlighting the queer experience. Follow them on Instagram.

Plein-air: Sunflowers

Learn how to paint the flower that inspired many of Van Gogh’s works from teaching artist Sarah Yu! Participants are provided with paper, brush, watercolor set, and clipboard.
