125 Years of NYBG

Over the course of its 125-year history, The New York Botanical Garden has evolved into something truly unique: a 250-acre National Historic Landmark in the heart of New York City with extensive plant collections, spectacular gardens, and renowned programs that each year delight more than one million visitors, inform cutting-edge scientific research and conservation, and educate thousands of adults, children, teachers, and families from the Bronx, the Tri-State area, and beyond.

To build on these strengths and ensure the Garden’s vitality now and for generations to come, NYBG is embarking on a major strategic initiative—the 125th Anniversary Campaign—to raise funds for critical projects that will:

  • Secure the Garden’s future as a green urban oasis through the improvement of its historic buildings, landscapes, gardens, living collections, and facilities
  • Deepen and expand NYBG’s science education programs for New York City schoolchildren, teachers, and families
  • Broaden the Garden’s reach to new audiences through exhibitions and programs that connect gardening to the arts and humanities
  • Strengthen NYBG’s leadership role in saving the plants of the world through scientific research, conservation, and programs that train the next generation of botanists

For more information about the Campaign and the 125th Anniversary Strategic Plan, please call Terry Skoda, Executive Vice President for External Relations, at 718.817.8815, or e-mail tskoda@nybg.org.

In 2016, NYBG undertook a year of extraordinary exhibitions, all-new collection dedications, and another remarkable series of accomplishments for our ongoing plant research and conservation programs—a fitting celebration of our 125th anniversary. See a few of the many highlights from this momentous year below.
