Exhibitions Volunteer Intern
Volunteer Services - Position Application Number:
The Exhibitions Office in the Horticulture Division at the New York Botanical Garden is seeking a highly motivated individual to assist with the development and implementation of exhibitions. This is an excellent hands-on opportunity for anyone interested in learning more about changing exhibitions at museums. Duties will change throughout the course of the internship as a variety of shows open and close.
Activities and responsibilities include:
- Research
- Complete initial research on a variety of topics to verify viability of exhibition themes
- Create a system to compile research by topic
- Collaborate with exhibitions team to use initial research for inclusion in grant proposals, interpretive signage, press releases, blog posts, and marketing content.
- Conduct research on the internet, at NYBG Library, and elsewhere
- Assist in compiling of information for staff and docent training sessions - Source music to complement exhibitions
- Installation / De-installation / Ongoing Maintenance
- Collaborate on lighting schemes
- Assist with signage installation
- Assist with artwork installation and de-installation
- Collaborate on logistical installation and de-installation calendars
- General Administration
- Assist with organization and archiving of past exhibition materials
- Assist with exhibit walk-throughs to ensure quality control of ongoing exhibitry
Requirements: Undergraduate students with a background and/or strong interest in museum exhibitions, art, horticulture, or plant science. Excellent oral and written communication skills and demonstrated library research experience are desired. Prior experience working in a museum is a plus. Please note this internship is unpaid.
