Botanical Art & Illustration

  • Position Title: Scientific Illustrator

    Organization: NYBG’s Institute of Systematic Botany

    Job Description: 

    We are currently looking for a scientific illustrator with experience in ink techniques and a strong background in botanical morphology to collaborate on the production of botanical illustrations for scientific publications. The work involves illustrating plant species based on herbarium specimens, photos, drawings, and technical descriptions, with special attention to morphological detail.

    This is a project based on demand, i.e., illustrations will be requested as needed, without a fixed number of plates, but we anticipate rather constant demand for the successful artist’s work.

    We are seeking someone with:

    • Experience in scientific illustration, preferably botanical;
    • Proficiency in ink drawing (on paper or digital);
    • Basic knowledge of plant morphology;
    • Ability to interpret taxonomic descriptions accurately.
