Episode 3

The American Chestnut with Michael Goergen

In this episode we’re joined by Michael Goergen, President and CEO of The American Chestnut Foundation, to discuss the tragic past—and hopeful future—of the American chestnut tree. In the early 20th century, chestnut blight arrived in North America—a parasitic fungus that soon spread throughout the East Coast, killing an estimated four billion American chestnut trees and effectively ending the country’s chestnut industry. But more than a century later, thanks to the efforts of the American Chestnut Foundation and expert botanists, work is underway to cultivate a chestnut tree that can resist the fungus—and thrive doing it.
