Opening Weekend Celebration | May 7-8, 12 - 6 p.m.


Treat yourself to some old-fashioned fun! Play croquet, fly a kite, and sip lemonade in the shade of the amazing Azalea Garden. Kids can make a bouquet and use Victorian-era props for photo ops, just in time for Mother's Day. Stroll the sun-dappled paths with a Garden Docent who can point out highlights of the collection. Picnic lunches and refreshments such as beer and wine will be available for purchase on both Saturday and Sunday.

Advance reservations for the Mother's Day picnic lunches are now closed.

There will picnics available for purchase onsite at the Azalea Garden while supplies last, as well as sandwiches, snacks and beverages. As always both of our cafes will feature custom sandwiches, a daily gourmet hot entrée (in the Garden Cafe), vegetarian options, and kids’ meals as well as snacks and beverages.

Once at the Garden, if you pre-ordered a picnic, pick it up at the new Azalea Garden and enjoy lunch at the multiple picnic areas in and around this incredible new garden. Bring a blanket and stretch out amid the kaleidoscope of colors, or dine at the tables in the Picnic Pavilion.

Tours & Demonstrations:

- Azalea Garden Guided Tours: 12:30, 1:30, 2:30, 3:30 and 4:30 p.m.
- Azalea Garden Curator Q&A: 12 - 6 p.m.
- Amazing Azaleas Home Gardening Demonstration: 12 and 2 p.m. - Tour the new Azalea Garden, ablaze with color, and see how to plant some favorites for the home garden.

Ongoing Activities (noon - 6 p.m.)

Badminton Games: Have a go at this garden party standard game.

Croquet Demonstrations and Games: Sign up for a round and get some tips from true players.

Kite Flying: If the wind is right, come fly a kite!

Refreshments and Food Samplings: Iced tea, lemonade, sandwiches, cookies, and more are available for purchase to enjoy in the shade of the trees. Also sample some tasty food and beverage from these vendors:

Ragtime Music: The band’s all here to make a festive party for all our revelers! The Banjo Rascals play tunes by John Philip Sousa, Scott Joplin, and their contemporaries will be enjoyed!

Photos among the Flowers with Mom: Grab a parasol for a fun photo op with mom. Make a great memory for Mother’s Day.

Stilt Walkers on Parade: Look up! Fun comes in all shapes and sizes--take a walk on your tippy toes to see if you measure up to the fun!

Tussie Mussie Cards and Bouquet making: Learn about the language of flowers and make your very own keepsake bouquet to keep or to give to that special someone. Please only one per person.

Cell Phone Tour and Take-Home Tips: A cell phone tour guides you through the plant collection and highlights the selections for this very site. Tip sheets are also available at the Home Gardening Center and during Home Gardening Demonstrations.

Shop at the Garden Booth: Find your favorite gardening tools, books, and plants to make your garden great.

Bronx Arts Ensemble Family Concert: The Ugly Duckling
In the Arthur and Janet Ross Lecture Hall
1 and 3 p.m.
Written by Dante Albertie with musical arrangement by William Scribner, The Ugly Duckling is an adaptation of the beloved Hans Christian Andersen tale of a homely bird who endures teasing and loneliness until he grows up into a beautiful, graceful swan. Admission included with All-Garden Pass.

About the New Azalea Garden

The Azalea Garden represents the transformation of the Botanical Garden's historic Azalea Way into a richly layered horticultural extravaganza that celebrates the beauty and variety of these popular garden plants.
The new Azalea Garden includes nearly a mile of woodland paths that meander through a collection of 3,000 azaleas and rhododendrons from around the world, planted beneath ancient native oaks, tulip trees, and sweet gums. Learn more.
