In 1969, visitors had the opportunity to visit NYBG during the weekend on the limited express buses. From Manhattan (8th Street and University Place) to the Bronx (NYBG’s Main Conservatory entrance), the hour trip costs were 75 cents for adults, and 10 cents for children, making stops at Bedford Park Station for the 4 and D subway lines. En route to the Garden, the buses went via 3rd & 7th avenue and the return trip from NYBG to Manhattan went via 7th and Lexington Avenue. Operating every 40 minutes across 28 stops, the shuttle service was promoted through flyers sent to hotels, travel agencies, and media outlets. Facilitated by NYBG’s Women’s Council Member, Mrs. James C. Mackenzie, and MTA chairman, William J. Ronan, the service was positively received, improving accessibility to the Garden. Although the duration of the express bus service is unclear, it prompted visitors to stop by the Bronx and experience the vibrant grounds and landscapes.
