Aleca Borsuk, Ph.D., Awarded Grant from the Human Frontier Science Program
Aleca Borsuk, Ph.D., Assistant Curator at NYBG’s Laboratory for Integrative Biodiversity Research was just awarded a highly prestigious Research Grant from the Human Frontier Science Program. Starting October 1 and over the next three years, Dr. Borsuk will be building upon her research on the leaf and plant ecophysiology and turning toward the forest floor—to understand the mechanisms, patterns, and principles of light harvesting in diverse deep-shade adapted plants, or their biophotonic traits.
This project will leverage an interdisciplinary team, including optoelectronics expert Dr. Valentina Bello (University of Pavia), that merges plant physiology, phylogenetics, photonics, and opto-electronic engineering to map the relationships between plants’ morphology and phenology to their photonic performance and understand which biophotonic traits optimize light absorption for photosynthesis. The outcomes of this project hold significant potential not only for plant biology, but also for inspiring novel solutions to major challenges in optics, technology, material engineering, and sustainability.
