Each Monday in the Edible Academy, we welcome veterans of all ages from the James J. Peters VA Medical Center for a day among nature—where they take part in hands-on gardening, working with plants to ease depression and anxiety, promote healing, and engage in activities for friendship and community building.

“There are so many different ways to express yourself and to grow, and I think that the THRIVE program is a wonderful opportunity to do that with other veterans,” said one participant. As we celebrate Memorial Day, hit the link in our bio to hear from some of our regular VA visitors on the ways THRIVE at NYBG—running since 2020—has brought them together through a mutual love of plants and the natural world we share.

The vultures have landed… and here’s a sneak peek at just a few of the many visitors making themselves at home ahead of the public opening of Ebony G. Patterson’s long-awaited NYBG debut, “…things come to thrive…in the shedding…in the molting…”—kicking off this Saturday, May 27.

Join us for the exciting first weekend of this major site-specific exhibition to explore provocative garden-inspired installations and exotic flora—from a monumental peacock sculpture to swarms of these glitter-encrusted scavengers—in works that examine the secrets to be found buried just beneath the garden as you know it.

While the Garden is home to over one MILLION plant

While the Garden is home to over one MILLION plants, it’s also home to a wide variety of wildlife—from mammals and reptiles to birds, insects, and amphibians of all sorts. And our feathered friends, especially, are often happy to strut their stuff for the camera. 🦅

This Bald Eagle gave quite a show soaring over NYBG on a clear, sunny spring day recently, reminding us that it’s the perfect time to get outdoors with your camera or binoculars and take advantage of the mild weather for some NYC birding! While the peak of cherry blossom season may be in our rearview mirror, the trees weren't quite done gifting us with springtime beauty. 🌸🙌

Once the green leaves have sprouted and the flowers have fallen, a carpet of soft pink petals remains to offer another of the season's fairytale scenes under the boughs.
