We’re dreaming about crisp air, cozy coats, jack

We’re dreaming about crisp air, cozy coats, jack-o’-lanterns, and all the colorful leaves to come. Fall starts this Saturday! 🍂

As your Pumpkin Headquarters, the Garden is decked out in hues of orange, red, and yellow, with grinning gourds setting the scene. Watch master carver @adambierton create fearsome jack-o'-lanterns every weekend until the end of October, and use the creativity he inspires on one of the live pumpkins you can buy at NYBG Shop to take home and carve. Be sure to get your tickets for Bales & Ales later this month, where you can enjoy craft beers, lawn games, and live music. And there's plenty to do for the little ones, too, including Spooky Garden Nights, where they'll don their Halloween costumes for an after-dark adventure along our winding trails.

This white ash is not only notable for its size, but for its regional rarity—making it a shoe-in for NYC’s Great Tree Search. 🌳

Last held all the way back in 1985, @nycparks’ Great Tree Search invited locals across the five boroughs to nominate trees of unusual size, interesting or rare species, unusual form, or historical significance, with the winning trees receiving special recognition for their importance to our City. Now, after over 35 years, it’s time to create a new list—and this time, the trees will be featured in an interactive city-wide map representing the incredible diversity and scale of NYC’s urban forest.

The Garden is your pumpkin headquarters starting this Saturday, September 16, kicking off with appearances by master pumpkin carver @AdamBierton EVERY weekend from now through the end of October. See him transform pumpkins of all shapes and sizes into frightening and fantastical beasts just like these as he works his way up to carving one of the GIANT pumpkins arriving in late October.

From free mini pumpkins to decorate here and take home; to evening events for kids and families during Spooky Garden Nights; a pumpkin patch to purchase your future jack-o’-lantern; and the arrival of fall foliage on the horizon, there’s plenty for all ages to enjoy this fall at NYBG. As we wait for fall’s cool, crisp air, there are few places at the Garden like the Thain Forest to beat the heat. 🌲🍃

Miles of trails wind through this 50-acre woodland—the largest remaining tract of old-growth forest in NYC, and the perfect chance to see what the five boroughs looked like before the City existed. And with tours ranging from botanical explorations of the Forest’s tree species, to Indigenous perspectives on these age-old spaces, and the relaxing meditations of forest bathing, there’s plenty to discover as you walk these shady, sun-dappled paths.

Hummingbird alert! For all of you asking when we’d see them this year, the time is now. 🚨🐦

The ruby-throated hummingbirds that take lunch at the Garden in late summer and early fall have been elusive—at least until this week. Look for these hovering green puffs of energy throughout our collections, and especially in the Perennial and Native Plant Gardens.
