Fountain of Life

Designed by the American Renaissance sculptor Charles E. Tefft, the Lillian Goldman Fountain of Life is a dramatic composition featuring sea nymphs, seahorses, cherubs, and a startled mermaid and merman. The water falls into two basins of white marble.

Cascade

Created in the 1930s, the Rock Garden’s cascade was fully restored in 2014, renewing an iconic NYBG water feature. Temporarily closed to the public

Green Materials Recycling Center (Staff Only)

All of NYBG’s green waste is processed here. Fallen leaves, felled trees, and pruned branches are used to create wood chips and compost that adds organic nutrients back into the Garden.

Rock Garden

Nestled against the Forest like a secret garden, this quiet oasis is home to thousands of alpine flowers and woodland plants.

Daffodil Hill

The Garden springs to life with tens of thousands of daffodils in spring. Daffodil Hill includes many antique cultivars planted in the early 20th century.

The Native Plant Garden celebrates the beauty of plants native to this region. Nearly 100,000 trees, shrubs, wildflowers, ferns, and grasses harmonize with the natural landscape while providing shelter and sustenance for wildlife.

The beautiful and unusual trees of the Benenson Ornamental Conifers demand to be admired all year long. Conifers of all shapes and sizes, from weeping to twisted, dwarfs to towering specimens, can be found here in shades of green, blue, and even yellow.

East Gate (Daytime Pedestrian Entry Point)

The East Gate provides access to NYBG from Bronx Park East. Open during NYBG opening hours. Access the Bx39 and Bx26 buses, as well as the 2 and 5 trains at Allerton Avenue.

Magnolia Collection

From March through April, these elegant and beautiful trees bloom in an array of pastel colors across the Garden grounds.

The Thain Family Forest is the largest remaining tract of old growth forest that once covered most of New York City. Today the Forest is managed by NYBG to remove damaging invasive species and keep the the ecosystem healthy.

John J. Hoffee Tulip Tree Allée

This rare display of 100-year-old American tulip trees lines the path to the Mertz Library Building. Trees average 90 feet tall.

Metro-North Commuter Railroad

Metro-North Railroad provides easy access to the Botanical Garden train station, approximately 20 minutes from Grand Central Terminal.

Ross Conifer Arboretum

One of NYBG’s first collections, the Ross Conifers include towering pines, elegant spruces, and mountain firs. Also look for flowering plants such as Japanese snowbell.

Matelitch Peony Collection

Peonies reach their peak in May with enormous blooms in pink, yellow, and white.

Ladies' Border

This border was designed in the 1930s by leading landscape architect Ellen Biddle Shipman. It is named in honor of the Women’s Auxiliary Committee who were instrumental in establishing many of NYBG’s collections.
