Over the last three years, this collection has used plants like okra to tell the stories of migration, dispossession, and reclamation that inform so much of the African American experience—and define much of what American cuisine is today. As we stroll the space with Dr. Harris, hear about the ways the African diaspora has, over the course of more than 500 years, transformed the Western Hemisphere with its cultures, labor, and agricultural know-how.

This bumblebee in the Edible Academy is getting its fill of nectar from one of our big, bright sunflowers as the season wanes and fall approaches. You can even make out the luggage-sized clumps of pollen on its back legs (and the mathematically exact spiral pattern that sunflower seeds grow in, called the Fibonacci Sequence).

Come experience Wonderland: Curious Nature in its lush summer looks, indoors and out, with weird and wild plantings in the Haupt Conservatory, imaginative topiaries just outside, and plenty of Alice history and science to discover in the Mertz Library. Afterward, make some time to explore the Thain Forest, where shady, sun-dappled paths are the best place to keep cool as you take in nature.

This lotus blossom seemed so intent on looking like a rose that we didn’t want to burst its bubble. 🪷🌹

Among the strange and beautiful flowers you may see in Wonderland: Curious Nature is the aptly named bat flower. 🦇

The classic Victorian plantings in the Haupt Conservatory right now reimagine the very Oxford gardens that inspired Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The further you venture in, however, the more weird and wonderful the plants get. This truly gothic addition to the displays is hard to miss with its black flower spread like whispering wings.

With summer waning and fall frights on the horizon, it’s perfect to get us ready for a new season! Don’t miss Wonderland on view through October 27.
