Beneficiary Designation

There are several ways to support the future of the New York Botanical Garden which simply require the completion of a form.

Life Insurance
One meaningful way to support NYBG is by updating your life insurance beneficiary designation. You can name NYBG as a primary beneficiary for either a specific dollar amount or a percentage of your policy’s value. Alternatively, you may choose to list NYBG as a contingent beneficiary—which means we would receive the proceeds only if your primary beneficiary is no longer living at the time of your passing.

Donor Advised Fund
A donor-advised fund (DAF) can provide a lasting legacy for the New York Botanical Garden. By designating a beneficiary for your donor-advised fund, you can ensure that your charitable legacy reflects your personal values and the institutions you care about most. Without a beneficiary designation, the remaining assets in your fund will be distributed according to the fund administrator’s policies and charitable priorities rather than your own philanthropic intentions.

To make NYBG a partial or sole beneficiary, simply fill out a beneficiary form from your fund administrator.

Bank and Investment Accounts
You can name the New York Botanical Garden as a beneficiary for your bank, certificate of deposit, or brokerage accounts. This can be done by using one of two designations:

  • Payable on Death: For bank and certificate of deposite accounts, a Payable on Death designation transfers your funds to a named beneficiary, like NYBG, after you pass away. You remain in complete control of your account during your lifetime.
  • Transfer on Death: For brokerage or investment accounts, a Transfer on Death designation allows you to transfer assets to one or more beneficiaries. You can specify a percentage to be given and can change the designation at any time.
