A Million Daffodils
The year 2016 marked the 125th Anniversary of the founding of The New York Botanical Garden. To celebrate this milestone, we began a dramatic expansion of the historic Narcissus plants at Daffodil Hill in November 2015. Nothing quite captures the feeling of the coming of spring like a hillside blanketed with yellow and white blooms, each flower signaling a return to longer days and warm nights.
We invite you and your family to become a part of this legacy. Each contribution of $25 will support the planting of five daffodil bulbs that will be part of this breathtaking display. Gifts can be made in honor or memory of a loved one, and the honoree or family member will be notified of your thoughtful gift by a beautifully designed e-card. Gifts of $25,000 or more will be recognized on seasonal signage at Daffodil Hill. Click here for more information about the Million Daffodils initiative.
About the Million Daffodil Initiative
Beginning November 2015 and continuing over the course of several years, one million new Narcissus bulbs will be added to the landscape of NYBG to create New York’s most extensive display of daffodils—a stunning four-acre floral spectacle that will herald the arrival of spring at the Garden each year.
This celebration of the Garden’s 125-year history will enhance and complement the existing plantings at Daffodil Hill, which date from the 1920s and include heirloom varieties no longer available in the nursery trade. Working closely with renowned bulb expert Brent Heath, we have developed an elegant design that features large masses of daffodils that naturalize well in our climate and soils. Some will be planted by hand while others will be planted using a special bulb-planting machine developed in Holland, placing 150,000 bulbs each fall until we’ve reached our million-strong goal.
