The New York Botanical Garden’s 2018 Collectors’ Plant Sale celebrates the June opening of the new Edible Academy by offering a unique selection of edible ornamental plants alongside botanical rarities and the latest varieties of tried-and-true garden gems. This year features lesser-grown ornamental fruiting trees such as Chinese pistachio, hardy pecan, and Asian persimmon, as well as new varieties of attractive and edible native shrubs such as black chokeberry, Allegheny serviceberry, pawpaw, highbush blueberry, and beach plum.

The Sale offers hardy trees and shrubs of all shapes and sizes. Exciting varieties of ever-popular flowering trees, including magnolia, dogwood, and redbud, will be available for collectors searching for the very newest introductions. Gardeners will also find modern introductions of several long-adored shrubs—lilac, rose, and hydrangea. Collectors will find their favorite rare rhododendrons and unique dwarf conifers.

A wide range of perennials will also be offered. Cheerful forms of spring garden beauties such as primula and clematis will adorn the tables, as well as a wide assortment of rare treasures such as the Azalea Garden highlight, Japanese cobra-lily, and the Rock Garden lovely, shooting star trumpet gentian. Look for outstanding and unusual dahlia varieties this year.

The popular NYBG Grown selections return with plants propagated from the Garden’s own collections or from seed collected around the world. Outstanding offerings include dove tree, Ohio buckeye, and Greek maple grown from Garden trees, as well as Korean pines grown from seed collected in China. An assortment of NYBG’s best Rock Garden perennials will be available, including ‘Tekara’ mountain alison, ‘Yellow Queen’ golden columbine, and ‘Pixie Pearls’.
