Professional Development Workshops
These half-day workshops are designed
to provide you, the classroom teacher, with important science
content and guidance in effectively utilizing techniques of
inquiry-based learning. Learn how to creatively use the Garden
as an extension of your classroom and receive proven classroom
activities, discussion points, and reproducible curriculum
materials. For your convenience, workshops are offered on
Saturdays and/or school breaks.

Three "G" in-service credits from
the New York Department of Education are available for participants
completing 10 workshops (additional fee and requirements apply).
Three units of New York City Department of
Education New Teacher Credit are available per workshop.

Plants
and People  |
|

One of the best ways to introduce plant study
to your class through the food, clothing, and medicine that
we use. In this workshop, teachers learn the importance of plants
used in clothing and that "Wearing plants" means more
than grass skirts and straw. |

The Plant World Demystified |
|

Ease into the topic of plant science and get introduced
to the “big” concepts, such as why plants are so
important, how plants and animals differ, and what makes a plant
a plant. Learn to use the galleries in the Adventure Garden
to convey to your students the significance and wonder of the
plant world. |

Flowers, Fruits, and Seeds |

Flowers, beautiful as they may be, serve a greater
purpose for the plants they grow on. Explore their raison d’être
and experience their dazzling diversity. Discover the parts
of a flower and they function during pollination, fertilizing,
and seed dispersal. Our staff will share with you many flower-related
activities to do in your classroom or at the Garden. |

Plant-Animal Interactions |
|

Can plants live without animals? Can animals survive
without plants? Learn about the many ways plants and animals
live together and interact-both positively and negatively-and
explore processes such as pollination, seed dispersal, herbivory,
and shelter building. |

How Plants Grow |

Everyone knows that plants need sun water to grow,
but how does the process work? Learn how plants use these resources
to produce food, and explore additional processes that are required
for plants to grow. Take advantage of the galleries in the galleries
in the Adventure Garden to support teaching these concepts to
your students. |

Introduction to the Forest |

Trek through the Garden’s 50-acre Forest
and experience ecology in action. See the diversity of seasonal
plants and animal life, learn the processes that keep this ecosystem
alive and healthy, and get prepared to teach your students all
about this important resource. |

Patterns in Nature
 |

Nature is filled with dazzling display of patterns,
from the tiniest to the most titanic organisms. This workshop
introduces teachers to the organization of the living systems,
from the veins in a leaf to the trees in a forest. Learn about
fractals and the Fibonacci series, and explore evidence of these
on the Garden grounds and your neighbors. |

Microscopic Explorations
 |
|

This workshop focuses on the minute world that
is invisible to the naked eye. Learn how to use hand lenses
and microscopes, and examine the diversity and beauty of tiny
things around us, from the pollen in the air to the algae in
water to the pores on a leaf. |

Wetland Ecology
 |

Come explore wetlands on the Garden grounds, including
swamps, marshes, ponds, bogs, and rivers. Find out the diverse
life and activity happening in these different wetland environments.
Examine aquatic plants and their unique adaptations and learn
the importance of preserving wetlands. |

Introduction in the Rain
Forests |

Learn about the fascinating ecology and diversity
of the rain forests by exploring the extensive collections in
the Conservatory. In this workshop, participants compare and
contrast the ecological feature of the lowland and upland forest,
learn about their significance worldwide, and discuss their
current plight. |

Introduction to the Desert |

in the Conservatory. Learn about the biological and physical
features of arid regions throughout the world as well as the

Seminars |
Half-day Seminar: $30

Full-day Seminar: $55 per teacher
Fees include all supplies, materials, parking, and entry
to the Garden.
A minimum of 12
participants is required.

Are you a school principal, science
coordinator, or staff developer interested in learning about
the myriad resources at the Garden? Choose from the topics
below and our staff will work with you to design a program
that accommodates your group’s needs. We also offer
a menu of long-term project ideas to support the eighth-grade
exit project. Coffee and tea are provided; arrangements may
be made for lunch. Suggested topics:

The Sara Lee Schupf Summer Institutes |
|
$150 fee
include curriculum materials reproducible handouts, and plants,
plus breakfast and lunch.
Location: Everett Children’s Adventure Garden
|
The Sara Lee Schupf Summer Institutes provide a week-long
intensive immersion in ecology and botanical science led by
professional scientists and educators. Participants in this
dynamic program learn how to make science fun through field
testes, hands-on, inquiry-based activities. Teachers discover
how to make the Garden an extension of their classroom, while
enriching the curriculum with award-winning resources and
more.
